The final section of the route passes Kingscross Point and it's viking burial ground with views over to Holy Isle. Following the coastal boardwalks to Lamlash Bay with it's "No Take Zone" marine conservation area. On rounding Clauchlands Point you'll soon see Goat Fell, Arran's highest hill, rearing it's head as you walk towards the end point of the trail in Brodick.

Tip van de auteur

If you have time you can take a short ferry ride out to the Holy Isle with it's monastery and herd of wild goats (see tips, hints & links for more details).

There is some road walking involved on this section, but only on small lanes and when on main roads there are good pavements. If the tide is extremely high or the waters rough then take care when on the boardwalks towards Lamlash as these may be slippery

Tips en hints

Points of interest

Holy Isle

Home to the Bhuddist Centre for World Peace and Health there are a range of courses and meditation retreats offered on the island. There are also some lovely walks to be had even though the island measures only 3km by 1km. A ferry runs from Lamlash Pier three times daily between Easter and October, the journey takes 10 minutes and no bookings are needed.

Food & Drink

In Whiting Bay, Lamlash and Brodick you'll find a selection of shops, delis, restaurants and bars. Make sire to bring a packed lunch or be prepared to stop in Lamlash for refreshment enroute and bring plenty of water for the day.

0.00 km – Begin with your back to the Arran Art Gallery, and TURN LEFT to follow the main road along the shorefront.

1.30 km - After the football pitch TURN RIGHT and follow the minor road past the church. Signposted for ‘Lamlash 7.5 km’.

1.60 km – After crossing the bridge TURN RIGHT to join a gravel lane.

1.90 km – At the end of the lane continue STRAIGHT ON across the pebble beach.

2.00 km – TURN LEFT off the beach to following the signpost for ‘Kingscross Point’ then cross over a stile.

2.30 km – BEAR RIGHT after the woods to pass through the wooden gate. Then continue STRAIGHT ON as you walk through two fields, crossing stiles on the way.

2.50 km – TURN RIGHT as you emerge from the next section of woodland and follow the trail as it descends.

2.70 km – TURN RIGHT at the wooden bench then after 50 m you will reach Kingscross Point. Here there are views of Holy Isle and it’s lighthouse across the water.

2.80 km – Continue STRAIGHT ON to descend passing by a small stone cairn then TURN LEFT to follow the shoreline.

2.90 km – Continue STRAIGHT ON passing the base of several fields.

3.20 km – At the split in the track BEAR LEFT to head inland, passing twohouses. (This is a short inland diversion becuase the fish farm owns the coastal land ahead.)

3.40 km – Follow the ‘Arran Coastal Way’ markers to ascend through woods and onto a farm track.

3.90 km – TURN RIGHT at the end of the farm track then continue following the minor road to bear left then right.

4.60 km – As the road bears left again continue STRAIGHT ON to cross a small wooden bridge. In 50 m cross another stile and bridge to TURN RIGHT and walk back towards the coast.

4.90 km – TURN RIGHT to follow the grassy vehicle track that soon turns to gravel.

5.10 km – BEAR LEFT as the track splits to take the descending wooden steps.

5.40 km – TURN LEFT at the shoreline and follow the sign for ‘Lamlash 4 km’. This coastal section can be boggy and overgrown but the intermittent boardwalks ease the way (take care as these can be slippery when wet). High tide here is usually not an issue, even though the water does come quite a way in, but take care nevertheless.

8.00 km – TURN LEFT at the end of the sandy stretch of beach (after passing some old upturned boats). Follow the gravel track passing a row of houses then after 100 m TURN RIGHT to join the minor road.

8.30 km – After passing the campsite BEAR RIGHT to leave the road behind and follow the gravel path to cross a bridge.

8.80 km – Join the main road and follow it to continue STRAIGHT ON through Lamlash. There are plenty of places to stop here for lunch if you didn't bring a packed lunch.

9.70 km – As the main road bears left towards Brodick continue STRAIGHT ON passing the church and follow the road for 1.5 km.

11.10 km – Continue STRAIGHT ON at the signpost for ‘Brodick via shore’.

11.40 km – Pass the Arran Outdoor Centre and in 500 m pass through the wooden gate to continue STRAIGHT ON towards Clauchlands Point. Hamilton Rock sits just off shore here - a good place for seal spotting.

12.70 km – After rounding the headland continue STRAIGHT ON along the coastline.

13.00 km – Cross the wooden stile then negotiate the boggy/rocky trail. Continue STRAIGHT ON the trail with views of Goat Fell ahead.

14.40 km – Cross a set of wooden steps and continue STRAIGHT ON.

15.00 km – Continue STRAIGHT ON to cross the rocky beach then join a gravel track passing a couple of buildings on your left.

15.20 km – TURN LEFT where the track splits and ascend away from the shore.

16.10 km – As the vehicle track bears left TURN RIGHT to leave the track and follow the signpost for Brodick, through woodland then open fields.

16.60 km – After crossing a few fields TURN RIGHT to descend following a perimeter fence. There are views of Brodick ahead.

17.00 km – Cross the stile then TURN LEFT onto Strathwhillan Road to pass the farm.

17.60 km – At the junction with the main road TURN RIGHT to descend to Brodick ferry terminal.

17.90 km – You have reached the ferry terminal and the end of the Arran Coastal Way - congratulations!

Aankomst met de trein, auto, te voet of met de fiets

A sturdy pair of walking trainers are adequate for this route if you don't wish to wear hiking boots. Along with your usual kit for a day walking in the elements make sure you pack an extra layer, a wind/waterproof jacket in case the weather closes in, suncream and midge repellant spray!
