An easy warm-up day, starting on the outskirts but heading ever-deeper into Triglav National Park, through woodland, mountain pastures and over rocky plateau. Occasional glimpses to monstrous mountains indicates what lies ahead!

A transfer has been arranged to drop you off on the edge of Triglav National Park, at an elevation of 1,200 metres. From here, however, you must continue on foot in order to access some of the most beautiful and inaccessible areas of the park.

The walk starts gently, winding through peaceful woodland where blueberry bushes and mushrooms carpet the forest floor, where cows huddle together between the trees and your footsteps break the silence. In a few places the land has been cleared into verdant pastures. In these clearings you will see traditional wooden huts which tell the story of those who tried to farm here. Often these are dilapidated, unloved and forgotten (though very photogenic), but others, such as the Lipanca Hut, offer a welcome refuge in the form of hot food and cold beers – traditional delicacies in a stunning environment!

From the hut the path climbs higher and begins to offer increasingly impressive views, before reaching a rocky saddle, traversing a section of limestone pavement, and abruptly descending back into the woodland. The views have gone but you have received a teaser for the walking that lies ahead over the following days.

Finish the hike at Pokljuka Biathlon Centre, where snow enthusiasts dream of winning fame. Professional athletes and national teams train here; you are bound to see people roller-skiing along the roads. Don’t be deterred if your afternoon is interrupted by gunfire – the café and hotel overlook the rifle range!

Some of the path is along rocky steps; be careful as these may be slippery, especially when wet.

There are some exposed edges; be sure to read instructions carefully, stick to the main path, and don’t wander close to the edge. Use handrails where provided.

In early spring/summer there may still be patches of snow. Walk around where it is possible, and otherwise place your feet carefully and use walking poles if you have them.

You must cross over a cattle grid. Take care when walking over this section, and bear in mind the metal may be slippery when wet.

Points of Interest

Biathlon Centre

Pokljuka has been a regular stop on the Biathlon World Cup circuit since 1992, and hosts a number of additional competitions each winter. During summer it becomes a top training area with elite athletes from across Europe coming to stay. You’ll no doubt see people on roller skis whizzing along the road, your dinner may be interrupted by rifle fire, and the people sitting opposite you at dinner or in the gym/sauna beside you… they may be Olympians.

Planina Lipanca

A bronze dagger was found near the mountain hut of Planina Lipanca, which dates human habitation of the area to the 10th century BC. There are also the foundations of ‘Middle Ages’ structures, and stone-paved paths that were used to transport iron ore, which all add to the depth of history in this region.

Food and Drink

The only opportunity to buy food or drink comes after 5.5km in the form of the Planina Lipanca mountain hut, so be sure to come prepared with sufficient provisions.

Additionally, Pokljuka, where the trail finishes and you will likely spend the night, is little more than a hotel and restaurant/café, leaving restricted options for buying extra provisions.

Pokljuka Centre

0.00km – You will be dropped off on a gravel road. CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON along this gravel road, heading away from the paved road, for 1.6 kilometres.

1.60km – Shortly after passing through a car parking area and cresting the hill to re-enter the forest, BEAR RIGHT to continue downhill. After 100 metres CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON through the traditional wooden gate – you must slide the wooden logs back to pass through, before closing it before you. The path then continues through Zajavornik pasture.

2.20km – After reaching the huts and passing through a second wooden gate, BEAR RIGHT onto the gravel road. You may be able to buy local farmed delicacies such as cheese and yogurt from  the Planina Zajavornik huts, on your left.

2.50km – At the crossroads, CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON, taking the narrow rocky path that passes uphill to the right of the picnic bench.

3.30km – CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON along the well-established path, signposted to Blejska koča Lipanca, ignoring the vague path on your right.

3.70km – In a cleared area with lots of tree stumps, CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON to head back into the pine forest, ignoring a right turn.

3.90km – CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON at the crossroads, following signs to Lipanca. Don’t be alarmed by the sign warning you about bears!

4.20km – BEAR LEFT as the path forks around a large rock, then after 20 metres BEAR RIGHT to continue climbing uphill.

4.60km – TURN LEFT sharply as you reach a T-junction with a wide gravel road, shortly after passing a small wooden bench. After 300 metres you may have to pass through an elasticated electric fence; unclip the fence using the rubber handle to allow you to pass through.

5.50km – As you reach the huts, BEAR LEFT onto the uphill rocky path, to pass all huts on your right. You will soon reach Blejska koča Lipanca, where you can buy some lunch or drinks.

5.60km – From the entrance to the hut, BEAR LEFT onto the uphill path, passing to the left of all picnic benches and the wooden bar area. At the junction after 100 metres, BEAR RIGHT then immediately BEAR LEFT. After 100 metres the path will fork, though both directions will soon rejoin.

5.80km – CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON, ignoring the paths which fracture off, ans they will all soon join up. Follow the red and white circular blazes of paint for guidance. After 200 metres CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON following the sign to Viševnic, and ignoring the right turn to Mrezce.

7.30km – CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON along the flat narrow path. Ignore the vague right turn to Mrezce.

7.50km – BEAR LEFT to continue along the established rocky path. Ignore the right grassy track signposted to Debelivrh. After 300 metres, BEAR LEFT at the cairn (pile of rocks) to remain on the path that heads slowly downhill.

9.20km – TURN LEFT as the path forks to follow the red and white circular blazes of paint and head uphill. The downhill right fork is a viewpoint to Triglav mountain, though be cautious of the exposed drop.

9.70km – From the top of the saddle, CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON, passing the large rock with red and white paint.

10.10km – As the path forks around a boulder, BEAR LEFT following the sign to ‘Rudno P’ painted on the rock. Ignore the right turn signposted to Triglav and Viševnic. The path will begin heading downhill.

10.40km – At a vague crossroads, with minor paths joining from left and right, CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON.

11.00km – The path continues along a featureless region of limestone pavement which is locally known as škraplje. Be careful for deep holes in the rock, and use the sporadic cairns (piles of rocks) and blazes of paint to guide you. In low-visibility conditions, you may need to check the map regularly.

11.90km – As the path forks beside a rock with two circular blazes of paint on, BEAR LEFT. This is a shortcut so ignore the red arrow that seems to direct you right. The path soon becomes grassy and heads downhill. After 200 metres, at the tree with metal ladder rungs inserted, TURN LEFT onto the wide path following the sign to Rudno Polje.

12.40km – BEAR LEFT as the path forks to walk downhill directly beside the electric fence on your left. After 300 metres ignore the wooden stile (steps over a fence or wall), and keep the fence on your left.

12.80km – As you reach the top station for a ski-lift, cross the wooden stile and BEAR RIGHT to head downhill parallel to the ski-lift.

13.00km – As you emerge at the gravel road, TURN RIGHT and then immediately TURN LEFT to head back into the woodland. This path continues downhill parallel to the ski-lift and electric fence.

13.30km – As you emerge at the bottom of the ski-lift and beside several huts, TURN LEFT to walk along the gravel road. After 300 metres, BEAR RIGHT to stick to the main gravel road.

14.00km – TURN RIGHT as you reach the paved road, then after 100 metres, finish in the car park of the Pokljuka Centre.

Such is the way of hiking in the mountains that you need to be prepared for all seasons and weathers; sturdy hiking boots, warm clothes and a waterproof/wind-break layer are all required, as is plenty of sun-cream and a healthy respect for the sun.

Walking poles will be a big advantage on some of these ascents and descents.

Ensure your phone is fully charged; if you doubt the battery will last throughout the hike it might be beneficial to bring a power bank.

This walk is isolated with few opportunities to buy food or water so be sure to bring enough with you.
