Ascend through the to the Huxlay Plateau before descending through vines to Mehring
Ascend the slopes of the Moselle river bank on a serpentine trail as it winds uphill. You are surrounded by panoramic views of the glistening Moselle river and its meadows covered with vineyards. Enjoy a picnic at one of the benches along the way, the perfect spot for a breather. Finally come to the Huxlay Plateau before descending through vines to Mehring, an authentic Moselland town.
Spend the evening sampling local regional dishes at one of Mehring’s restaurants. Hearty, meaty food is the order of the day, washed down with a glass of delicious white wine.
In rainy weather, the narrow roads can be muddy and slippery, we recommend wearing footwear with a good grip.
Zitronenkrämerkreuz Detour - The Zitronenkrämerkreuz detour, named after a commemorative cross, runs for around 20 km around the Moselle towns of Mehring, Pölich, Schleich and Ensch. Quiet passages with many changing landscape formations alternate with short ascents in the slope over the Moselle, crowned with a view of unique river panoramas. Cultural sights such as the "Roman water pipe" in Pölich or the "Zitronenkrämerkreuz" are included in the tour. There is a connecting route between Schleich and the Zitronenkrämerkreuz, so that the path can also be divided into two independent loops (8.3 km and 13 km).
We recommend wearing hiking boots that are well broken-in, plus a rain jacket and waterproof trousers in wet weather, as well as taking sun cream and a hat on nicer days.
In your information pack, you’ll find a detailed list of all the required hiking gear, including some good hiking boots, appropriate clothing, a rain jacket and a backpack.
