Today you’ll be walking via the Forcella del Moschesin (1950m) and up the rocky western slopes of the Cima de Zita. From Rif. Passo Duran follow the route to Rif. Pramparet, then enter the Parco Nazionale delle Dolomiti Bellunesi, the wildest of the national parks on the trail and with a good chance of spotting deer and marmots. Then follow route 514; in one or two places the gradient particularly steep. Pay particular attention to the way-marking as you reach a rocky area that leads to a ridge path on the day’s highest pass at 2451 m. The ridge path requires some preparation – both physical and mental – as it feels somewhat exposed. The sense of achievement of having reached the last high pass on the Alta Via 1 is fantastic! Enjoy glimpses of the Venetian plain and watch out for chamois and marmots as you descend sharply to Rifugio Pian de Fontana (1632 m).

Be sure to check the weather forecast before embarking on the high route option; in the sun it's a great walk but in the cloud or rain it can quickly become an ordeal!

Veiligheidsaanwijzingen

Some of the path is on rocky steps; be careful as these may be slippery, especially when wet.

There are some exposed edges; be sure to read instructions carefully, stick to the main path, and don’t wander close to the edge. Use handrails where provided.

In early spring/summer there may still be patches of snow. Walk around where it is possible, and otherwise place your feet carefully and use walking poles if you have them.

This route is above 2,500 metres so bear in mind you may feel a shortness of breath and additional muscle fatigue associated with the altitude.

Uitrusting

Such is the way of Alpine hiking that you need to be prepared for all seasons and weathers; sturdy hiking boots, warm clothes and a waterproof/wind-break layer are all required, as is plenty of sun cream and a healthy respect for the sun.

Walking poles will be a big advantage on some of these ascents and descents.

Ensure your phone is fully charged; if you doubt the battery will last throughout the hike it might be beneficial to bring a power bank.

This walk is isolated with few opportunities to buy food or water so be sure to bring enough with you.

The ridge above Rif Pramperet is exposed and does require some scrambling, however it isn’t as daunting as the description made me fear. In many ways it takes no more care or “ physical and mental preparation “ than several other segments of the Alta Via 1 South. If you made it this far, you will be good to go on this segment 😊
