After overcoming Hribarice Pass you are plunged into a new world as you traverse limestone pavement and descend into the Valley of the 7 Lakes, finishing at Koča pri Triglavskih Jezerih hut on the shores of Double Lake.

If you can muster the energy and brave the cold, watching the sunrise from Planika hut is a perfect way to start the day. The clouds turn pink and the mountains golden, a sea of sunken mist swirls through the valley, and the first rays of sunlight inject immediate warmth into your body.

After leaving Planika Hut the trail makes a bee-line towards a vertical and seemingly-impassable wall of rock. As you get nearer you will see a path zig-zagging up a narrow scree slope towards a mountain pass guarded on both sides by mighty monolithic towers of rock. Having reached Hribarice Pass, you are plunged into a new world, as you navigate a path across a limestone plateau riddled with cracks and deep holes.

The trail then descends into the Valley of the 7 Lakes, which has been recognised as ‘the epitome of a pristine and primeval environment’ since the 19th century. You will first pass the small, shallow mountain lakes of Rjavo jezero (Brown Lake) and Zeleno Jezero (Green Lake), both characterised and coloured by the algae present there. Jezero v Ledvicah (Kidney Lake) is larger, deeper and utterly hypnotising in the abnormal shade of its turquoise waters. Triglavskih Jezerih hut, where you will spend the night, sits on the shores of Double Lake; be sure to wander down to the lake in the still hours close to sunrise and sunset to enjoy the mirrored reflections of the surrounding mountains.

Some of the path is along rocky steps; be careful as these may be slippery, especially when wet.

There are some exposed edges; be sure to read instructions carefully, stick to the main path, and don’t wander close to the edge. Use handrails where provided.

In early spring/summer there may still be patches of snow. Walk around where it is possible, and otherwise place your feet carefully and use walking poles if you have them.

This route is above 2,400 metres so bear in mind you may feel a shortness of breath and additional muscle fatigue associated with the altitude.

This route involves sections with metal footplates and steep steps carved into the cliff-wall. Take extra care in these areas, hold the handrail provided, and bear in mind it may be slippery when wet.

Points of Interest

Triglav Lakes

The Valley of the 7 Lakes is something of a misnomer as there are 10 lakes (though 3 regularly dry up over summer). It is recognised as one of the most beautiful regions of the Julian Alps. All except the highest lake are hydrologically connected with each other, with their waters flowing to Lake Bohinj and eventually the Black Sea. A range of interesting flora and fauna lives in this valley, and there are even the fossils of 100-million year old ammonite shells.

Koča pri Triglavskih Jezerih Hut

Koča pri Triglavskih Jezerih (Triglav Lake Lodge) was originally built in 1880 by the Austrian Hiking Club. Extensions and renovations in 1955 and 1988 have increased its size to the current state. It is only open during the summer months but a small winter shelter can provide refuge for up to 18 winter adventurers.

Food and Drink

There are opportunities to make a short detour to the mountain huts of Doliču and Prehodavcih after 3.2 and 6.7 km, though there is nowhere directly on the trail. You can arrange a sandwich from Planika Hut, if you wish to bring your own provisions and enjoy a picnic by one of the lakes.

Triglavskih Jezerih Hut

0.00km – Start on the wide gravel area at the front of Planika Dom. BEAR LEFT of the mountain hut to head downhill, following the sign to Koča na Doliču. After 630 metres use the metal rods and metal handrail to help you tackle a more precipitous section of the footpath that hugs close to the rocky cliff-wall.

1.50km – After the descent, CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON to cross over a riverbed (probably dry) and follow the gravel path which walks beside a grassy plateau, before bending left after 100 metres, and beginning to climb a rocky slope. This path will then contour along the steep slopes of Šmarjetna Glava.

2.50km – BEAR RIGHT from the gravel path onto a rocky scramble with a red metal rod and a metal footplate to assist you, and follow the red painted arrows and the sign to Dolič. This junction is easy to miss so check the map regularly as you approach it, and continue following the red paint.

3.20km – At the junction with a hut about 200 metres away on your right, TURN LEFT, taking the second left turn, and following the sign for Sedmera Jez (7 lakes) to head directly away from the hut. This path will zig-zag towards the mountain pass.

4.10km – As the path appears to split on the scree slope, TURN RIGHT to continue heading uphill towards the mountain pass. This section is along very loose scree and with no blazes of paint to guide you. Check the map regularly, and follow the most established path as it zig-zags uphill.

4.40km -  From the Hribarice mountain pass, BEAR LEFT following the sign to Zasavska koča na Prehodavcih and 7 Jez. Ignore the right turn to Kanjavec. This path will twist and turn across the lunar landscape of limestone pavement; check the map regularly to guide you in low visibility, and follow the red paint markings.

5.00km – CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON past a prominent red signpost. After 200 metres the path will pass just to the right of a second red signpost. Keep following signs to 7J, and the red streaks of paint.

5.90km – BEAR RIGHT as the path forks to follow the painted sign to Prehodavci and Koča pri Triglavskih Jezerih (the mountain hut you will stay in tonight). Ignore the left turn to Zelnarica. After this right turn you will be heading downhill towards the small pond of Brown Lake.

6.10km – BEAR LEFT as the path forks again, following the sign to Prehodavci. Ignore the right path that contours along the mountain slopes and towards the hut.

6.20km – BEAR RIGHT as the path forks, following the sign to Z. Jezero Log. This path will head directly for the mountain hut, though after 500 metres you will arrive at Rjavo Jezero (Brown Lake).

6.70km – Having arrived at Rjavo Jezero (Brown Lake), TURN LEFT sharply to head away from the mountain hut, following the painted rock signed towards 7 Jez. After 300 metres you will pass along the left shore of Zeleno Jezero (Green Lake), and then continue downhill through the valley.

8.40km – CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON past a prominent red signpost on your left. This path will contour along the left slopes of the mountain and pass above Lake Ledvica (Kidney Lake), on your right.

10.50km – Now in the woods, CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON towards Lepo Špičje and Koča pri Triglavskih Jezerih, and ignore the sharp right turn past the bench.

11.50km – CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON past the artificial reservoir of Lake Močivec, and then finish at Koča pri Triglavskih Jezerih mountain hut after 200 metres. Why not grab a hearty bowl of ričet (traditional barley soup), and sit out on the terrace enjoying the sun?

Aankomst met de trein, auto, te voet of met de fiets

Such is the way of hiking in the mountains that you need to be prepared for all seasons and weathers; sturdy hiking boots, warm clothes and a waterproof/wind-break layer are all required, as is plenty of sun-cream and a healthy respect for the sun.

Walking poles will be a big advantage on some of these ascents and descents.

Ensure your phone is fully charged; if you doubt the battery will last throughout the hike it might be beneficial to bring a power bank.

This walk is isolated with few opportunities to buy food or water so be sure to bring enough with you.
