If you enjoy walking beside water, then this hike is for you! After leaving Odeceixe you’ll join the River Seixe which is on a journey to the sea, just like you. Thankfully your route is more direct than the river which twists and turns lazily through the valley.

You arrive at the coast beside Odeceixe Beach which is considered one of the Rota Vicentina’s finest. At the river-mouth, sandwiched between sea and river, is a sand-bar which shrinks and grows with the tides, and is awash with sun-lovers in a frenzy of surfing, swimming and beach volleyball.

The following section continues along the clifftops and is a feast for the eyes. Admire the Atlantic which shimmers out to the horizon, softly rising and falling like an animal breathing. Closer to the shore, waves shatter and erupt against the cliffs, forcing their way into unexplored coves and crevices.

After pulling yourself from the magnetism of the coast, the footpath strikes across agricultural heartlands beside an irrigation channel. By now a world away from the crowds, you’ll witness Portugal at its most traditional. Farmers watching over a herd of cows or stooping in the fields will raise a hand in a friendly wave.

Tip van de auteur

Bring a towel, swimming costume, a book, or even money for a surfing lesson, and allow for plenty of time at Odeceixe Beach, one of the finest along the entire Rota Vicentina.

There are many exposed and unfenced edges throughout the walk. Additionally, some of the cliff-edges may be unstable; be careful and remain on the path.

There are several stretches where you must walk on the road as there is no pavement. Walk on the left side facing the oncoming traffic unless there is a sharp left bend, in which case you should cross to the outside edge to allow drivers the maximum time to see you.

Some of the path is along rocky steps; be careful as these may be slippery, especially when wet.

The section beside the irrigation channel is very narrow; take care on this section.

Points of Interest

River Seixe

The River Seixe forms the boundary between Alentejo and the Algarve. A sand-bar has formed across the mouth of the river which constitutes Odeceixe Beach, considered to be one of the Fishermen Coast’s most beautiful.

Odeceixe Windmill

The dazzling blue-and-white windmill (Moinho) occupies a prominent position on one of the most elevated parts of Odeceixe, allowing it to catch as much wind as possible. It was constructed at the end of the 19th century and is still in full working order to mill corn and wheat, though is seldom used. From here there is a beautiful viewpoint to the lower part of the village, and through the River Seixe Valley.

Food and Drink

A small village has built up around Odeceixe Beach, where you can find a wide variety of cafes and restaurants. You will reach the beach after 3 kilometres.

0.00km - Start in the Village Square beside the fountain and village map. CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON along the one-way road signposted to Praia (Beach). There are green and blue, and red and yellow markings on the nearby post.

0.25km – CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON at the triangle partition in the road. After 100 metres, TURN RIGHT along the gravel vehicle tracks, passing the sign reading ‘excepto proprietários’.

1.20km – TURN RIGHT at the T-junction to walk along the paved road. Remain on this road for 2 kilometres as it heads towards the beach. There is often a shoulder to walk beside the road, though it alternates between the left and right side.

3.20km - As the roads split into three after passing car parking on either side, CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON choosing the middle road. This road will bend left to reveal a wide, coastal panorama on your right.

3.80km - As the paved road flattens out at the top of the hill, TURN RIGHT to walk along the gravel road, shortly passing through a dead-end sign. Ignore all side roads and continue along the well-established road following the green and blue, and red and yellow markings.

4.40km - After reaching a rocky clearing, CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON along the narrow, winding path, passing a sign about unstable cliffs. As the path forks after 100 metres, BEAR LEFT to walk along the wider sandy path. There is a small blue and green cross on the path ahead, to stop you continuing.

6.30km - As you reach a deep gorge and can go no further, TURN LEFT to head away from the sea. After 200 metres, BEAR LEFT along the gravel road. This will soon become paved.

7.60km – CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON following the sign for João Roupeiro. This is where you leave the waymarked footpaths, so ignore the green and blue, and red and yellow markings which direct you right.

8.80km – TURN RIGHT at the T-junction to Maria Vinagre. After 50m, TURN LEFT to pass through the 10 tonne weight limit sign.

9.10km - Just before passing a bridge over TURN LEFT along the footpath to walk beside the irrigation channel. This path is narrow, so be sure to walk carefully to avoid falling into the water.

10.40km – CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON to cross over the paved road and continue walking with the irrigation channel on your right. After 700 metres, CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON to cross a second road and continue beside the channel.

11.40km - As you reach a gravel road, TURN RIGHT to cross the bridge and then walk with the irrigation channel on your left. After 100 metres, as the gravel road bends away from the channel, BEAR LEFT onto the footpath to keep walking beside it.

11.70km – As you reach a paved road, TURN LEFT to cross the bridge and then TURN RIGHT to walk with the irrigation channel on your right.

12.20km - As you reach a paved road and the irrigation channel disappears underground, TURN LEFT and then immediately BEAR LEFT to walk along a cobbled road. After 600 metres you will pass to the right of the windmill and then continue heading downhill along the cobbled road.

13.10km – Finish beside the Church.

Be sure to bring plenty of sun-cream and a healthy respect for the sun.
