Your day starts with a 30min transfer to Ljubelj on the Austrian border, the starting point for a very interesting walk. The trail leads through an underground tunnel, originally dug by merchants in order to reduce the travelling time between the Slovenian state of Carniola and the Austrian state of Carinthia. As you emerge the trail follows an ancient shepherd’s route into the verdant Draga Valley.

Walking through a landscape of rich meadows and deep silent mountain forests you soon reach the historic village of Begunje. This is the home of the famous Slavco Avesnik Oberkrainer band, the primary exponents of ethnic Slovenian music. You will surely wish to visit the 12th century Kamen Castle and the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque delights of 15th century Katzenstein Mansion.

Tip van de auteur

There is a mountain hut (Planina Planica) where you can purchase lunch or a little further break at the unique Planince, a unique hut filled with charm.

You will need a head for heights as there are multiple sections which take you along the rock face and have steel cables to guide you.

Tochtbeschrijving

0.00km – Your walk starts in the Ljubeli car park (1071m), take the path which leads up to the (now closed) hotel, once past the hotel CONTINUE STRAIGHT through a gravel car park

0.20km – CONTINUE STRAIGHT on to a small grassy (which turns into a gravel) track heading along the side of the mountain.

This trail continues for 800 metres through a small forest and gravel tracks as you make your way along the mountain track until you reach the tunnel.

1.00km – You have reached the Bornov tunnel (over 100 years old) which will take you 250 metres through the rock. Step carefully as if it has rained recently water can be on the tunnel floor, if you are tall watch your head.

1.25km – Reach the other side of the tunnel, CONTINUE on narrow footpath taking you along the mountain face, you will also cross one steep skree slope. Step carefully as there is a steep drop to your left.

2.50 km – You will reach a gravel road, TURN RIGHT ascending on the gravel road following the sign to Preval

Depending on the time of year you embark on this adventure there can be gates in place to keep the cows fenced in. If you come to a gate, pass it and CONTINUE your ascent. There can be cows roaming around the Preval hut.

4.20 km – You will come to a saddle (1315m), TURN LEFT if you wish to have a break at the hut or if you wish to continue your walk TURN RIGHT passing the shrine and follow the wooden and red signs directing you to Planina Planica where your ascent continues along the gravel road.

(depending on the time of year they may be another barrier here)

4.80km – Walk to the top of the gravel road(1416m), TURN LEFT following the road which will start to descend following the red sign to Planina Planinca.

7.00 km – You will come to a T junction, to your right you will see the Planince Hut (this hut is quite unique, as it is decorated with branches from the forest giving it an artistic edge). Take a break here or TURN LEFT following the road as it continues to descend.

7.30km – The road will take a right turn and then left turn, in the left turn there is a small forest track which you can CONTINUE STRIAGHT on. It zig zags it’s way down through the forest crossing the gravel road a couple of times.

This trail snakes its way through the forest and the path isnt always obvious, keep an eye out for the red and white circles on the trees which indicate that you are on the right path.

8.00 km After crossing a gravel road a couple times in a sharp left hand bend join the gravel road and CONTINUE to descend on it. You will cross 3 bridges as you make your way down following the river.

9.10km – The gravel road with TURN RIGHT, you will continue following it ignoring the red signs to your left.

This trail will continue to wind you down to the valley floor, taking you over more bridges and a bee farm. Until you reach the guest house (Dom v Dragi), which is perfectly located for a cold drink or some food.

9.50km – CONTINUE STRIAGHT past the guest house and TURN RIGHT immediately after it. This next section is a little tricky, follow the gravel path as it slowly ascends. When the path stars to cruve keep an eye out for a wodden sign in the trees to your left with Kripin written on it (see picture)

9.70km – FOLLOW wooden sign for Kripin into the forest on a small footpath which will guide you through the forest (ignore the tracks which turn left off the path)

9.85km – You will reach a T Junction, TURN LEFT on to the descending path, 30 metres dow you will reach 2 paths turning to your RIGHT, take the upper path (there will be a couple of fallen trees you will need to walk under/step over).

10.10km- The 2 paths join, CONTINUE STRAIGHT on to a larger path (see picture), you will turn the corner and see multiple blue concrete pillars which will guide you.

10.60 km – You will reach a crossroads right before crossing the river, take the first right (grassy footpath), ignoring the track which takes you along the river.

11.00km – TURN RIGHT over a small foot bridge and ascend up a grassy track to the Castle. You will arrive between a ruin and the castle (go in for a visit – its free) CONTINUE STRAIGHT between both buldings and descend down some steps TURN LEFT through the ruins and TURN RIGHT immediately after exiting them. Follow this path as it takes you down to the entrance of the castle.

11.20 km – Arrive at the entrance of the Castle, TURN RIGHT as you follow the road through a residential area.

11.30 – Cross a small bridge and TURN RIGHT following the road, there is no pavement therefore watch out for cars.

11.40 km – You will reach the main road, TURN RIGHT following the road sign to Bled

11.50 km – TURN LEFT on the paved road which turns off before crossing the bridge following the cycle path to Zapuzel. From here the path will continue (roughly) straight till you reach your hotel.

12.30 km – BEAR RIGHT as the road reaches a T Junction which will take you along a small creek, the path will continue through farmlands and residential areas.

12.80km – You will take reach a fork in the road, BEAR LEFT and CONTINUE STRIAGHT past 2 shrines, one on your right and a little further on in the middle of a cross roads.

Sorry. Had not finished. Crowds thin out after the first restaurant. Then a short climb and followed by long and varied descent. You stumble upon the magnificent Castle Kamen at the end of the valley tracks. Great day out. Good views.

An amazing start on a slightly vertiginous path, 120 m of which is a tunnel just over 6ft high. Phone torch required! The route up was busy as public holiday but the attractions are obvious with a restaurant after 4K. Crowds thinned out 90 % after that with
