The lively town of Killarney is the official start of the Kerry Way and the famous Ring of Kerry road route. It has narrow streets, colourful shops and impressive views of Purple Mountain, and MacGillycuddy’s Reeks beyond.

Walk south from this popular tourist town, crossing the River Flesk, and walk a gravel road which you’ll share with horse-drawn jaunting cars. Skirt the edge of Castlelough Bay with wonderful views across Lough Leane to the Shehy Mountains as you hike towards the Victorian townhouse and gardens of Muckross House and then on to the foot of Torc waterfall.

Revel in the serenity of the wild moorland, oakwoods and lakes of Killarney National Park. Here you’ll also find Lord Brandon’s Cottage and a beautiful six-arch bridge which crosses the Gearhameen river, in the heart of Black Valley.

Tip van de auteur

Make sure to visit St Mary's Cathedral before setting off, it was completed in 1855 and it is Killarney's best-known architectural landmark

Veiligheidsaanwijzingen

This walk covers a lot of distance over open land with little in the way of shelter from the elements, so make sure to check the forecast and speak to locals if you do decide to set out on a bad weather day. The section between Galway’s Bridge and Black Valley is prone to flooding after heavy rainfall, please follow the alternative walk from Killarney to Black Valley via the Gap of Dunloe if this is the case.

It can be trickier to navigate if the visibility is low so you should take extra care to stick closely to the GPS tracks.

The terrain consists of footpaths to Killarney National Park, then a mix of forest and moorland paths through the park, and then minor roads to Black Valley. Although the roads and lanes can be quiet it's always best to walk on the right to face any oncoming traffic and make yourself as visible as possible.

There is a risk of ticks in the grass. Use insect repellent and check your body on arrival in Black Valley.

Tips en hints

Food & Drink

There are various shops, bars and cafes in Killarney to buy a packed lunch, or you could speak with your host to arrange for a packed lunch to be made for you. Aside from a small cafe near Muckross House and a seasonal tearoom (Lord Brandon's Cottage), there's nowhere en route to purchase lunch or snacks.

Black Valley is a remote, small village with a small shop and not many places to eat, it is best to speak with your host to arrange for dinner to be prepared.
