There is a choice today between a high-level walk or a low-level one today. The low-level walk is a little longer, but a much easier option. Either taking the route over the fell tops or skirting around the bottom, you are assured a great day's walking. Caldbeck was once a thriving industrial town with woollen mills, bobbin mills and a brewery all powered by the river which runs through the town. Today it is a friendly and proud village largely untouched by tourism.

Veiligheidsaanwijzingen

Important: In bad weather and poor visibility, the high route via High Pike should not be attempted and instead, the lower level route can be taken. Please see the alternative walk details for this.

This route involves crossing stone walls and fences by means of step-stiles, ladder-stiles as well as passing through (kissing gates) and crossing footbridges. Please take extra care, especially when squeezing through small gaps as it can be slippery in wet weather and it might be easy to lose your balance.

This section involves some road walking along quiet country roads as well as very short stretches along main roads. Always be mindful of other road users and pay attention when crossing roads.

Tochtbeschrijving

These directions are a combination of turn-by-turn directions up until Skiddaw House and written directions onwards following the low route to Nether Row and Caldbeck. This alternative is not more tiring easier to navigate. In combination with the plotted GPX tracks, you should have no problems finding your way.

0.00km – Facing the monument on Station Road continue STRAIGHT ON across a bridge over River Derwent alongside Fitz Park. After 250 meters TURN LEFT up a tarmac path and cycleway towards Keswick Leisure Pool & Fitness Centre. Keep right of the building passing a car park and later a mini-roundabout where you TURN LEFT onto Brundholme Road.

0.70km – At the junction, ignore another road on your right and continue STRAIGHT ON along a roadside path passing houses along Briar Rigg. After 350 meters TURN RIGHT onto a gravel path signed ‘Skiddaw 4 miles’. Follow the uphill path as it crosses over the busy A66 road.

1.30km – Cross through a gate pas Spooney Green B&B on your left and walk into Latrigg Woods, with information boards on the left. Walk STRAIGHT ON into the woods as you ascend, and the path becomes steeper.

1.80km – BEAR LEFT and continue to follow the path uphill, avoiding any tracks to your right or left. Later cross through a gate and continue along the path as it gently ascends uphill passing more information boards. Enjoy the views beyond Keswick and Derwent Water to Whinlatter, Grasmoor and beyond.

2.30km – Continue STRAIGHT ON avoiding the path to your right signed for ‘Latrigg Summit’, instead keep straight ahead to follow the track across an open slope.

3.00km – Go through a gate and TURN RIGHT in direction of a kissing gate. Immediately TURN LEFT following signs to ‘Skiddaw’ along a walled path towards another gate. Continue STRAIGHT ON along the stone wall.

3.50km – TURN RIGHT onto a small narrow path avoiding the path uphill on the left. Continue to follow the clear track as it gradually descends, BEAR RIGHT up a broad stony path.

5.00km – Cross through a gate into the valley of the Glenderaterra Beck, following a rocky path that gets more rugged, and then flattens out again.

6.50km – Continue STRAIGHT ON ignoring another path rising from across the valley on your right.

7.50km – Go STRAIGHT AHEAD through a gate and continue along a footpath across the moorland. Cross a footbridge over a beck and soon after catching a glimpse of Skiddaw House, the highest hostel in Britain.

8.70km – Just after passing Skiddaw House TURN RIGHT and walk downhill along the stone wall.

IMPORTANT: Please note that these are the instruction for the low route to Caldbeck. If clouds are obscuring the summit of Great Calva (the fell north of Skiddaw House), the visibility is likely to be poor on High Pike and you are advised to take this alternative, low route to Nether Row. In fair weather, take the route named "Keswick to Caldbeck via High Pike (High Route)" to enjoy fantastic views from the highest point of the Way.

Follow the access track that leads away from Skiddaw House and down to a ford and a footbridge. Follow the route as it goes up a heather moorland slope crossing a dip where a small beck flows. Descend the bendy track and enjoy more views to the waterfall further down the track. Most of it will be hidden by trees. Walk through a gate, then cross a bridge as you follow the route ahead at the foot of rugged Bakestall.

The track now follows a tarmac road and turn left up, then follow it down through fields and gates, eventually reaching a road near Peter House. Find a step-stile as soon as you cross the road and see the signpost beside the gates.

Don't follow a clear track through a field but instead bear left as marked by a blue arrow. Follow the track aiming for the furthest corner of the field and go through a gate.

Turn right for the Cumbria Way as a four-way signpost indicates. Follow the route in a straight line beside four fields, from gate to gate, keeping High Close farm to your left. Another gate stands beside a wood, go through the gate and descend into the wood, crossing a step-stile and a footbridge over Halls Beck.

Turn right, crossing a road and climb a steep, forested slope. Cross a ladder-stile at the top and turn right along a nearby track.

Follow the route as it leads upwards to a gate and step-stile, but do not follow the trail ahead and turn left instead, following a grassy, pathless hill.

On the far side of the hill you will reach a gate, ladder-stile and a four-way signpost. Cross the stile as signed for Orthwaite and cross a grassy hill with views to Little Tarn down to the right. Descend steeply and cross a wooden bridge over a small beck.

Follow the route as you walk ahead, then turn left over a step-stile, and continue on uphill. Reaching a gate, keep left and go through a higher gate instead. Continue through a field until a marker points right through a gate. Walk ahead aiming for a solitary house flanked by two other groups of buildings. A stone step-stile leads to a road beside Orthwaite cottage.

Turn left following the road for 2.5km as it winds with a view to Over Water down to the left. Continue straight on at a crossroads, signed for Caldbeck and turn left off-route for Uldale.) Look left to spot Chapel House Reservoir before steeply climbing and later levelling out with the Longlands Fell rising to the right.

Continue to follow the road to cross Longlands Beck and turn right through a gate marked 'Uldale Commons' before climbing to houses at Longlands. Follow the track uphill, sometimes grassy or stony, with views back towards Over Water and Skiddaw.

Continue along the track that bends to the right and drops to ford Charleton Gill. Rise gently and descend on a moorland slope. Continue straight on down a tarmac road, crossing a bridge with white railings. Turn right at the road junction at Greenhead, crossing a stone-arched bridge.

Follow the route for 2.5km through farmland, including briefly ascending steeply past farm buildings at Branthwaite.

Cross a bridge and climb relatively steeply past an old school, reaching the hamlet of Fell Side. Follow the road past a couple of buildings before turning right to reach a gate.

Climb gently on parallel concrete strips across a grassy slope and approach a farm at Little Fell Side. Follow a stone wall straight ahead, do not drop down to the buildings, and take a path across a wet, grassy slope to a farm at Potts Ghyll.

Continue on crossing a beck before turning left through a small gate. Walk down to the farm access road and turn right to follow it, crossing cattle grids and another beck. Walk gently uphill towards Nether Row.

When you reach the tarmac road turn left, to be joined by the main Way from the right. Continue straight ahead (north) and continue for 1km down between fields. When reaching a crossroads, go straight ahead through an overgrown former road flanked by hedges. Ignore the first footpath that turns right through a gate and walk ahead for a further 75m to the next turn that has a Cumbria Way marker. Briefly afterwards turn left over a step-stile into a field, watching out for yellow marker arrows.

Cross the field and walk through a gate into another field, then look left of the telegraph pole for a step-stile to cross a farm track. Continue through a kissing gate and walk beside a hedge, down through a field and past a telegraph pole through a gate.

Continue on through a woodland path and cross a stone-arch bridge over a beck. Turn left at the end of the path, then right to join a steep road called B5299. This road leads to Caldbeck, where you will reach a road junction with the Old Smithy Tearoom and the Oddfellows Arms.

You have now arrived in the town centre of Caldbeck! There is a tea house on your left, called The Old Smithy or walk a little further for a beautiful beer garden at Caldbeck’s pub, Odd Fellows Arms.

Uitrusting

Sturdy hiking boots, warm clothes, and a waterproof/wind-break layer are a must! The weather can change quickly, and it is therefore important to be prepared and carry any extra equipment or clothing even if the weather looks okay. If you are used to walking with walking poles, it could be great to bring them too.

Ensure your phone is fully charged; if you doubt the battery will last throughout the hike, it might be beneficial to bring a power bank.
