After dropping your bags at your accommodation in Keld,  a short walk takes you to the Keld Heritage museum. We recommend having a nosey here before tackling a section of the iconic Pennine way that leads you to the highest Pub on the British Isles!

The Tan Hill Inn sits isolated at 528m (1730ft) above sea level... yet is usually always busy with celebratory walkers and cyclists alike who have managed to make their way up to it. The Inn itself dates back to the 17th century and you can see this in its simple charm with its exposed beams, wood-burning fireplace, and welcoming atmosphere.

Ensure you grab a pint of local ale, a spot of lunch, and then head back down to Keld via Robert's seat with views to Nine Standards Rigg. a group of nine cairns along the escarpment to your right. The path eventually passes Ravenseat farm, the home of the Yorkshire Shepherdess Amanda Owen.

Towards the end of the hike, you will drop onto Wainwrights' C2C path and see the River Swale again as it cascades through the Swale Valley and brings life and colour to the region. Dry-stone walls carve the landscape into fragments, many filled with sheep. Scattered across the valley, in every field, are small stone buildings known as a cow house or a cow’uss if you’re a local; such was the economic significance of a cow and her milk that these buildings were built to offer protection from the harsh elements.

Keld is only a tiny village but sits on the crossroads between two walks, the Coast to Coast and the Pennine Way. Despite the hordes of travellers that pass through each year, it is a charming and forgotten village where life appears to carry on as "normal", as it has for generations.

Tip van de auteur

Whilst one of the obvious highlights of today's walk is being able to say you've had a pint at the highest pub in Britain,  there is also the potential opportunity for an al-fresco cream tea stop at Ravenseat Farm, famously owned by the "Yorkshire Shepherdess" Amanda Owen, her husband and her 9 kids - they are featured on the British television show "Our Yorkshire Farm" giving an inside peek into the life of a working Yorkshire Farm. In the summer months (if you are lucky), they offer cream teas to walkers passing by their farm. For more information, visit: https://www.yorkshireshepherdess.com/stay-or-visit/cream-teas/

Route

There are a few stretches where you must walk on the road as there is no pavement or verge. Walk on the right side facing the oncoming traffic.

There may be sections where you will be walking through fields containing livestock.  Be vigilant and respectful of all animals.

For any river crossing - there are always normally stepping stones or an obvious way to cross - be careful when crossing as it can be very slippery.

The paths can sometimes be tricky to follow in open featureless sections, especially in very bad weather (especially fog). Make sure to stay on the correct trail by concentrating carefully on your GPS tracks and maps.

There be some sections today on indistinct paths, make sure to stay on the correct trail by concentrating carefully on your Macs App GPS tracks and maps. The Turn-by-Turn section can also provide you with extra tips if you run into any problems.

Map

If you wish to carry a hardcopy map, we would recommend buying the Yorkshire Dales Outdoor Atlas by Harvey Maps. Alternatively, you may wish to print the daily maps directly from our app.

Tochtbeschrijving

*** To help you follow the route with confidence we have provided a general overview below of the Keld Loop Walk route to keep you on track. The Ales and Dales Trail largely follows England's national walking trail networks and is navigationally straightforward, however, please ensure that you follow the GPS tracks in the Macs Adventure smartphone app to ensure you have a safe, enjoyable and problem-free day.  The daily maps can also be printed from the web version of the app should you wish to take paper copies with you. ***

Stage 1 (Keld to Pennine Way Path turn off) - 0.0 to 0.6km: With the Keld Heritage Centre to your back turn right to pass the Keld Chapel on your right as it curves round to reveal a gravel lane that's signed for the Swale Way and the Coast to Coast Bridleway. Follow the path till it forks, bearing left to head downhill on the brick-lined path, following the sign for Pennine Way and Swale Trail. At the bottom, cross the wooden footbridge bearing left onto the gravel slope heading uphill, with Lower East Gill Force on your right. Follow the route as it climbs to the left of the charming Upper East Gill Force and where you will turn left here up a stony track leading onto the Pennine Way path towards East Stonedale Farm.

Stage 2 (Pennine Way path to the Tan Hill Inn) - 0.6 to 6.8km : Once on the Pennine Way, it's an easy-to-follow pack-horse trail through rough open moorland, that climbs gradually to the Tan Hill Inn at 528m above sea level.

Stage 3 (Tan Hill Inn to Jagger Road trail path) - 6.8 to 7.2km: After having some lunch and drinks at the Tan Hill Inn, head out (with your back to the Tan Hill Inn entrance) and turn right, following the road for around 200 Metres, before turning left onto another road at the junction signposted for Keld and Thwaite. After around another 200m down this road, you'll see a small faint track that cuts through the moorland on your right (Signposted with a small fingers sign and known as "Jagger Road").  If there has been significant heavy rainfall in the area for continuous days, it might be worth skipping this section to Ravenseat and instead of following the road down back to Keld - there are a few opportunities where you can also cut back onto the Pennine Way Path you walked up earlier.

Stage 4 (Jagger Road trail path to Ravenseat Farm) - 7.2 to 12.3km: Following the Jagger Road path, heading southwest downhill over some rough moorland, you'll cross some streams before eventually reaching Stonesdale Beck, follow it downstream till you reach the finger sign that marks the point at which you cross. After crossing Stonesdale Beck the path starts to climb adjacent to Thomas Gill (rocky escarpment to your right) until you follow another finger sign that marks a turn onto a track heading alongside Thomas Gill Rigg. Whilst this section is a lot easier going, the path narrows eventually towards a fence where it can be hard to follow in the overgrown grass - Pay close attention to the Macs App trail line here so you don't come off track (you can get your bearings by following the fence line to the point where it noticeably should be crossed). Follow the path as it skirts alongside Robert Seat's seat, over a couple of stiles heading downhill where you will eventually cross Hoods Bottom Beck and then pass the Jenny Whalley Force waterfall down to Ravenseat Farm ahead of you.

Stage 5 (Ravenseat Farm to Keld) - 12.3 to 16.6km: After crossing a stone bridge at Ravenseat Farm and walking through some barn buildings follow the signpost that picks up the C2C trail and leads you back to the start point in Keld. This final section is straightforward, signposted, and mostly on well-established trails that are walked by many C2C walkers every day - keep an eye on the trail on the App and you simply can't go wrong!

Uitrusting

Sturdy hiking boots, warm clothes, and a waterproof/wind-break layer are all required. The weather can change quickly in the Dales so be sure to take all equipment even if the weather looks okay. Walking poles will be a big advantage on some of these ascents and descents.

Ensure your phone is fully charged; if you doubt the battery will last throughout the hike, it might be beneficial to bring a power bank.

You can visit the Tan Hill Inn at halfway point for food and drink - serve from midday - and on the descent back down, Ravenseat farm sometimes offers al fresco cream teas to walkers passing by. Please ensure you have plenty of water and emergency food (energy bars/trail mix) with you at all times. Please also ensure you check in advance of Pubs/cafes and shops opening hours on the day you are due to walk, in Yorkshire opening hours are varied and they can be closed on certain days of the week (walking post-Covid19 lockdown restrictions means their opening hours could be even more erratic, so please check to avoid disappointment).

We followed the above walking route on Friday 2 July and would like to bring an error in the route instructions to your attention as it did in fact result in us walking in the wrong direction for three miles before we realised that the route was wrong and we had to return almost back to the starting point and therefore had walked six miles in total on the wrong route and was unable to complete the full circular as planned. The error is in stage 1 where it states after 80 metres to turn right and proceed through a wooden gate signposted to Rampsholme, this in fact is totally incorrect and the sentence needs to be omitted as you need to in fact to turn left to follow to follow the Pennine way and it does actually instruct you to do that in the next sentence ! the route through the gate signposted to Rampsholme takes you towards Crackpot Hall on the other side of the valley and this instruction seems to be from a totally different walk! Following your instructions we proceeded through the gate and followed a track which we thought must be the Pennine way, the next stage of the walk. Although it wasn’t signposted as such, we have often found signposts to be missing so we were not unduly concerned at this stage. We appreciate that we should take an OS map with us which we generally do but on this occasion as the instructions seemed relatively clear we decided not to take one. We appreciate that the routes can be downloaded for free but we felt we needed to make you aware of this error as it did in fact ruin the walk and we would hate someone less experienced to get totally lost on a quite rugged and isolated moorland.

Hi Catherine, Thank you for letting us know - this must have been a slight mix-up when our pathfinder walked the trail and written up the route notes. I've taken this discrepancy out our written turn by turn section.

Parking is also available at Keld for a very reasonable small fee via honesty box. Nice waterfalls at the start and a drink at Tan Hill Inn
