After a quick ‘pit-stop’at the Commando memorial to soak up the views and contemplate the story of these brave men, continue by taxi on to Gairlochy where you follow the Caledonian Canal via Neptune’s Staircase to the base of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain, in Fort William.

From the tranquil hamlet of Gairlochy), begin your walk along the Great Glen Way, following the way-markers west towards Fort William. Pass the massive gates of Neptune’s Staircase and on to the broad Caledonian Canal. Against a magnificent back drop of the Western Highlands, trace a path alongside the shores of Loch Eil and on to the River Lochy. Continue towards the bustling centre of Fort William, with views of Ben Nevis and the saltwater Loch Linnhe.
