Today one of your options  is this walk around the Schluchsee, a reservoir lake located at 930m above sea level. It is the highest reservoir in Germany, the largest lake in the Black Forest, and is a popular recreation spot with the locals.

Take a bus to Schluchsee where today’s hike begins and continues to the view point of Bildstein. Follow the trail along quiet wooded trails and lake side paths. There are various different trails around the lake, and you are able to shorten any of them as you wish by using the convenient MS Schluchsee ferry. Why not enjoy a piece of traditional Black Forest Gateau at one of the cafés ideally situated on the banks of the lake? When you are ready to return, take the bus back to Todtmoos where you can once again relax in the hotel wellness area.

Tip van de auteur

Once you have explored the lake on foot, why not relax and enjoy it from a different perspective? A ride on the MS Schluchsee is a perfect way to finish the day. User

Be aware that certain sections of the trail can become slippery when wet and a sure foot is required. However the trail is still walkable in poor weather. Stick to the designated paths.

Allow plenty of time to catch your return bus and always include time for rests and photos in your planning.

There are a few restuarants/cafés around the lake where you can pick up a refreshment, or you may prefer to bring a packed lunch with you.

Our hike starts at Schluchsee train station. From here, we immediately cross the tracks and walk directly around the lake, towards Aha. After a short stretch, we cross the railway bridge, which separates Schluchsee and the smaller lake from one another. Heading past the boat rental area, we now hike up a natural path to the scenic Amalienruhe area. Continuing to follow the Schluchsee shoreline, you’ll often walk past small stretches of sand that are perfectly inviting for a short break. From the boat jetty in Aha, we continue to follow Seerundweg.

Once over the dam, which separates the fish breeding pond from the Schluchsee, we follow the quieter part of our circular route and soon arrive at the Unterkrummenhof, the perfect place to refuel those batteries with a hearty snack. If you want to take some time to relax, make yourself comfortable on the sunbathing lawns, or perhaps on the Schluchsee shoreline by some former Black Forest farmland. Once refreshed and with all your strength back, the route continues along Seerundweg. We circle the bay at the widest point of this Black Forest lake, crossing the Krummenbach.

Past the hut belonging to the Schluchsee Fishing Club and the Schöne Buchen rest stop, we’ll soon meet the dam again and the jetty for Seerundfahrtsschiffs MS Schluchsee. From here, you can decide to shorten your hike and cover the last stretch of the journey by boat. You could also enjoy a nice break in the dam’s beer garden. For those persevering hikers among you, head over the dam and continue in the direction of Seebrugg railway station. Once there, we can make a detour towards Seehotel Hubertus, which beckons with its magnificent lake views and a big slab of Black Forest cherry cake. We then walk back to the junction that leads us along to the station. After a short walk along this road, we’re plunged back into the idyllic atmosphere of the forest, following Kohlgrubenweg all the way back to Schluchsee town.
