When you leave Aberfeldy today, you're also leaving behind the central hub of Perthshire in exchange for the county's remote outer reaches.

Start out easy on quiet, paved road before breaking free and heading toward forest, field and dirt road.  Nearly all of the fairly gentle ascent is at the start of the walk, and the River Tay peaks out down below, guiding you along toward the top of Loch Tay.

For much of the walk, you will have been following a section of the Rob Roy Way in reverse, but you'll depart from that route as you wind your way down on a paved road into Kenmore. Come into town along a recently renovated lochside beach and continue into the heart of tiny Kenmore to finish your walk.

Tip van de auteur

Spend your free time after today's short walk enjoying the prime lochside position of Kenmore. Grab a coffee at The Paper Boat and rest your feet while soaking in the view.

Veiligheidsaanwijzingen

There are several stretches where you must walk on the road as there is no pavement or verge. Walk on the right side facing the oncoming traffic unless there is a right-hand turn, in which case you should cross to the outside edge to allow drivers the maximum chance to see you.

Be aware that some of the way, may pass through active forestry sites. Continue on as normal, though maintain extra awareness of your surroundings here and follow guidance on signs displayed by the forestry works.

You may also pass through fields with livestock on this route. The animals won't harm you, though please pass with a wide berth.

Uitrusting

Such is the way of British hiking, that you need to be prepared for all seasons and weather; sturdy hiking boots, warm clothes and a waterproof/wind-break layer are all required, as is plenty of sun-cream and a healthy respect for the sun.

Walking poles are not necessary on this walk with only minor ascents and descents, but you can bring them along if they are part of your standard walking equipment.  Walking shoes may be an advantage for this section, which is on mainly solid paths and paved roads.

Ensure your phone is fully charged; if you doubt the battery will last throughout the hike, it might be beneficial to bring a power bank.

This walk is isolated with limited opportunity to buy food or water so be sure to bring enough with you.
