Aberfeldy Loop Walk via The Birks and Castle Menzies
A nature walk through the Birks of Aberfeldy and via Castle Menzies.
Today incorporates an easy walk with exploration of the local area. The walk takes you through the area known locally as "The Birks". Originally called the Dens of Moness, the birks (from the Scots for birch trees) overlook the Falls of Moness. They were renamed when Scotland’s national bard, Robert Burns, penned the poem The Birks o’Aberfeldie in 1787. After walking back into the village then, if you wish, you can head out on a riverside trail to visit Castle Menzies, 16th century Scottish Estate with a walled garden and tea room. Aside from this you can also explore the lovely village, including a must-visit to the Dewar's world famous whisky distillery.

Veiligheidsaanwijzingen
If there are any stretches of road walking and if there is no pavement or grass verge, please take extra care. The general rule is that you walk on the same side of the road as oncoming traffic, in order to avoid having your back directly to oncoming traffic. Be prepared to walk in single file and to stay as close to the side of the road as possible.
There may be sections where you will be walking through fields containing livestock. Be vigilant and respectful of all animals.

Uitrusting
We recommend sturdy waterproof boots or shoes with ankle support if possible – steep steps, exposed roots and (if wet) slippery rocks can pose a risk.
Along with your usual kit for a day walking in the elements make sure you pack an extra layer, a full set of waterproof and windproof layers along with a hat, gloves and neck scarf (e.g. a Buff) in case the weather closes in. Suncream and midge repellent spray is also a good idea for the summer months!
