Your Scottish Coast to Coast starts with a truly world class day of biking. After a couple of miles of gentle canal side riding we throw ourselves into glorious singletrack behind the distillery and make our way to The Nevis Range and the man-made delights of “The Witches Trails” this man made forestry centre has miles of challenging singletrack and most riders will spend at least a couple of hours riding these fantastic trails.

Alternatively gravity addicts may wish to tackle the awesome Nevis Range Downhill Track which has gondola uplift and red and black graded downhill trails. After a few hours of fun you can enjoy a 15km spin on forest roads and singletrack to your overnight accommodation in Spean Bridge.

Consignes de sécurité

There are some busy roads on enroute, do not ride on the A82 out of Fort William – it is very busy and narrow and take care at the crossing of A82 at distillery.

Conseils et recommandations supplémentaires

Services

Fort William: There are all the amenities that you would expect from a large town.  Your trips starts beside a large supermarket for any provisions and there are restaurants, cafés and bike shops on the main street in Fort William.

Spean Bridge: There is a small local shop and restaurants as well as a pub in Spean Bridge.

Shortcut

Follow Great Glen Way (both a walkway and cycleway) signs to the Caledonian Canal and then follow the canal to Gairlochy, turn right at Gairlochy and cycle up minor road to Spean Bridge. There is a short section from the Commando Memorial to Spean Bridge on the busy A82.

Point of Interest

Ben Nevis – Scotland’s highest mountain at 1344m dominates the view to your right.

Fort William – One of the largest towns in the highlands is a busy place in the summer with numerous cafés, outdoor shops and the West Highland Museum (http://www.westhighlandmuseum.org.uk/) tells the story of the West Highlands and her people.

Ben Nevis Distillery (http://www.bennevisdistillery.com/) – You will go through the grounds of this distillery so it would almost be rude not to pop in for a wee nip to help you on your way.  If you have not had a distillery tour before, for a small fee it is worth taking the trip and seeing how the ‘Water of Life’ is made.

The Nevis Range Mountain Biking Centre & Gondola - http://bike.nevisrange.co.uk/ - At Nevis Range (on route) there are cross country and downhill, lift assisted mountain bike trails. On a clear day you should consider taking the Gondola to the top station for excellent views.

Itinéraire

0km: START from Morrison’s Supermarket and follow Great Glen Way (next to McDonald’s) Signs until the bridge over the River Loch.

00km: Don’t Cross the River Lochy, instead go right through the archway.

2km: TURN LEFT after the castle and continue parallel to river to road junction opposite the petrol station.

6km: CROSS the road, go into the distillery; keep left so you are in amongst the storage sheds. When you are faced with a large white building with a red shutter door,BEAR LEFT and pick up the track

The track starts off wide but thins out towards the end. It may appear that there is no track, but we promise it is there.

8km: When you reach a sign pointing back towards the distillery, TURN LEFT.

Shortly afterwards the track splits, BEAR LEFT on to the lower, left hand track.

When you see a sign for the Witches Trail, 10 Under the Ben Track, follow this.

The trail will now take you to the Nevis Range Ski Centre.

9.1km: Food and drink available at Nevis Range

Many additional trails available including world cross country course – Enjoy!

Leave Nevis Range follow signs and way-markers for Spean Bridge.

Note signage is poor in places so follow GPS and map!

19.1km: Follow tracks to bridge over railway line adjacent to Spean Bridge Station.
