As the route starts in the mediaeval town centre with its rabbit warren of streets, the directions are all very close together. I have therefore not included distances until you reach the church on the edge of the town.
0.00km – From the Office de Tourisme, Head through the arch and into the Place de Consuls. TURN LEFT and head to the corner where the restaurant Saveurs des Halles is located.
- At the corner TURN LEFT again, and then Immediately right down the small street named Rue Duguesclin which runs down the side of the restaurant.
- At the end of this short street TURN RIGHT, and then immediately left down Rue de Mirepoises.
- At the main road, carefully cross and got STRAIGHT ON down Rue de Pourtanel, following the signs for Hotel Saint Anne. If you are staying at Hotel Saint Anne, you can join the route here by turning left as you exit the hotel.
- Continue down Rue du Pourtanel until you merge with the main road. Here carefully cross to the other side and continue ahead over the railway lines and up the hill.
1.00km – Stay on the main road and TURN LEFT at the top of the hill, and continue ahead. This will quickly take you onto a long 4km decline. The temptation is to pick up speed, but please be aware of oncoming traffic. You will also be turning sharply left at the bottom of the hill, so be prepared for that,
5.00km – TURN LEFT, following the signs for Gluges. This is easy to miss when you are speeding downhill. Once you have turned left continue up the slope, and you will eventually come to another long dramatic downhill section, that sweeps you down the valley side to the river, with impressive cliffs towering over you on the left.
6.80km – At the end of the “cliff run” there is a small hotel, and you should BEAR LEFT to Gluges at this junction. There is a no entry sign, but this refers to cars only. Continue through the village, and take the right fork downhill. At the end, turn sharply left and head up the short slope and immediately turn right again to join the main road through the village. This road is very narrow – please ne aware of oncoming traffic.
7.70km – At the busy main road, carefully cross the road and continue STRAIGHT ON ahead up the slope, following the signs for St Denis les Martel (D32). This is a very busy road, so please cross with care. You may wish to stop at the hairpin bend and walk up the Belvidere de Copyere viewpoint at the metal cross above you. You cannot take the bike, and must scramble up the rocks. The views are worth it however.
12.10km - At the small village of St Denis les Martel, TURN RGHT over the railway lines and follow the road ahead.
12.80km – At the cross roads with the white metal cross on your right, TURN RIGHT and continue along the main road through the houses and round to the river crossing.
14.30km – Cross the suspension bridge (single lane, so please watch out for cars coming the other way – only cross when it is clear). TURN LEFT after the bridge and continue up the road.
19.90km – on entering the village of Carennac, continue across the bridge and BEAR LEFT at the end and follow this road through to the far end. You may wish to spend some time here exploring the pretty village.
20.50km – At the far end of the village, BEAR LEFT onto the busy road and follow the signs for Saint Cerre. You will be on this next section for just over 5km. It’s mostly downhill and you will pick up speed, but be aware of all traffic and make you don’t miss the left turn off the main road turn for Prudohomat
25.90km – TURN LEFT onto the D43 for following the signs for Prudhomat and cross the small bridge ahead. You pass through a small village, and after that follow the road sharply tound the left.
28.40km – On reaching the village of Prudhomat, TURN RIGHT and immediately BEAR LEFT at the fork, following the signs for Saint Cerre.
28.70km – At the top of the road, with the church on your left, BEAR RIGHT down the D19 following the signs to Sant Cerre (7km). Continue past the Jardin D’Enfants.
33.50km – At the junction with the D807, carefully cross the road and go STRAIGHT ON. It does have a cul-de-sac sign, but there is a small path you can cycle through at the far end.
33.90km - Pass through the narrow path and stop at the main road. To avoid the heavy traffic, we are going to go STRAIGHT ON following the sign for Granval. Carefully cross the road when it is safe to do so, and continue up the hill ahead. You will find this hill very steep particularly at the right bend ahead, but persevere as the hills are short.
34.60km – Continue round to the left up another sharp, but short hill and TURN RIGHT at the top. As you move down the steep slope, don’t continue round the sharp right turn, but instead come off, following the next instruction
35.20km – Just before the hairpin bend, BEAR LEFT off the main route and onto Rue Chanteclerc. Follow this road up and around to the right and at the far end TURN RIGHT. Follow this road all the way downhill to just in front of the fats main road into the village.
36.10km - At the bottom, TURN LEFT and cycle parallel to the main road. At the end turn right and head down the main road. Carefully cross the road, and negotiate the roundabout, taking the second main exit, signposted for “Centre Ville”.
36.70km - Continue along the main street into the town, and go STRAIGHT ON at the next roundabout next to the hospital. Continue along this road as it swings gradually right, then follow it sharply left onto the main shopping street.
37.00km - After less than 100m TURN LEFT and into the Pace du Mercadial, and here you have finished today’s route. There are a number of options in the square should you wish to reward yourself with a light refreshment.
