A glacial alpine valley with a melt water stream and open forest in its lower reaches. After a steady gentle climb on a good even gravel track, there is a challenging climb of between 1.5-2hrs up a switch back, rocky path to a mountain hut followed by a short, gentle descent on a wide gravel track to the cable car station.

On leaving the picturesque town of Pontresina, you cross the River Flax before entering a forest of Cembra pines: be sure to keep an eye out for red squirrels and woodpeckers. You climb steadily along side the river Roseg as it rushes downhill, until you reach the restaurant Roseg Gletscher with magnificent views of the retreating glacier and snow-capped mountains at the head of the valley. There follows a protracted, arduous climb up to the Fuorcla Surlej as the views over the valley become increasing stunning. Finally there Is a short descent towards the cable car station at Murtel. Descend with the cable car to the valley floor from where you can get a bus to St Moritz (10 mins) From St. Moritz you can then catch a train to Pontresina (10 mins).
