Hike the Via Albula, through ancient mountain forest to the popular, Lake Palpuogna. The trail continues past Alp Weissenstein (Crap Alv) up to the beautiful mountain lakes Crav Alv Laelets. Find an idyllic place to rest before tackling the last few meters up to the pass. If you are lucky you can spot ibex here. Descend into Val Bever and the idyllic village of Spinas, where you catch the train to Pontresina.

Note de l'auteur

Keep your eyes peeled for the wealth of wildlife available to spot throughout the hike. If you see people looking through binoculars, try to work out what they can see; chances are they have spotten deer, mountain goat, or ibex.

Consignes de sécurité

The descent from the Fuorcla Crap Alv pass (2466 m above sea level) leads over a steep slope on a very narrow path. A head for height is essential to enjoy this walk.

Allow enough time to complete your walk as the times provided are solely walking times, and breaks have not been included.

Parts of the path are for shared use, for hikers and mountain bikers. Stay alert and make sure to make space for the other people using the trail.

Some of the fields may have cows in; they are not aggressive but take care not to startle them, and pass around them with a wide berth.

In early spring/summer there may still be patches of snow. Walk around where it is possible, and otherwise place your feet carefully and use walking poles if you have them.

Itinéraire

START at the Preda train station. Follow the route - Via Albula no.33. as it ascends slightly, through a beautiful pine forest, and on to the crystal-clear Lai da Palpuogna / Palpuogna lake and further up to the Crap Alv. PASS a little lake, Lais digl Crap Alv, as the trail continues to ascend to Fuorcla Crap Alv, and to the highest point of this hike as you CONTINUE to Val Bever.

REACH the summit, descend steeply into Val Bever, accompanied by a wonderful view of the Piz Bever, Piz Ot, Piz Muottas, Piz Spinas and many more.

In Spinas, you can stop for a break at Gasthaus Spinas. From here the route passes above Beverin, follow the path through the fairy tale forest with its larches, mountain pines and Swiss stone pines. Further on the path is lined with huge sculptures created by local artists that bring the stories of Engadin authors to life.

ARRIVE in the village of Bever. It is worth taking a tour of the small village with the impressive church tower and houses with windows set deep into the facades.

From here you can catch the train down to Pontresina.

S'équiper

Such is the way of Alpine hiking, that you need to be prepared for all seasons and weathers; sturdy hiking boots, warm clothes and a waterproof/wind-break layer are all required, as is plenty of sun-cream and a healthy respect for the sun.

Walking poles will be a big advantage on some of these ascents and descents.

Ensure your phone is fully charged; if you doubt the battery will last throughout the hike, it might be beneficial to bring a power bank.

This walk is isolated with few opportunities to buy food or water so be sure to bring enough with you.
