The clear blue lake, the towering mountains and the white, imposing glacier make for a day of epic proportions and wide open vistas.

Take a direct bus from  Zinal to the Barrage de Moiry (35 mins) from where you have various options to explore the aquamarine Moiry reservoir. We recommend taking a walking route around the entire lake, instructions for which can be found below. Start with a ‘low route’ around the right bank of the lake, with views to the Glacier de Moiry in the distance. At the head of the lake, follow the trail as it ascends before returning to the barrage on the high path. Return to Zinal by bus.

Note de l'auteur

On a still day the reflections in the lake are mesmerising, don't forget to take your camera. You may even catch sight of the friendly furry Marmot"

Take the bus no. 455 from Zinal to Lac de Moiry, the journey takes about 30 mins.  You can find the timetable here: https://www.sbb.ch/en (you will need to get off at the stop Grimentz: Barrage de Moiry - please note this bus only runs during the summer months)

Consignes de sécurité

The weather can change rapidly in the Alps, always check the forecast before you start the days hiking and pack appropriately. If the weather is too rough, do not begin the trek.

There can be left over snow drifts early in the season, the can sometimes have melted underneath - particularly if it covers moving water. Just because it looks solid, it doesn't mean it is. Exercise extreme caution when crossing such snow drifts and if possible walk around them to where you can see the solidity of the ground clearly.

Some of the ground can be uneven, with rocky/pebbly paths and even ice. Ensure you have suitable footwear with ankle support, and step cautiously when needed.

Much of the path is on clifftops and there has been some erosion, for this reason, the path is sometimes unclear, be careful of the drop and of loose rocks and edges to the cliffs.

Some of the gates are cattle deterrents and are electrified, be sure to use the plastic handles and reattach the cable to the housing when you pass through, they are 12 volts, so not dangerous but very unpleasant.

 Food and Drink

There is a small café at the bus stop, which is the beginning and the end of the route. Otherwise, your hotel can provide a packed lunch (request the previous night, payable locally) and be sure to bring water.

Points of Interest

Moiry Reservoir

A 4-kilometre long reservoir capped by a mighty dam that stops the water flooding the valleys and villages below. Its aquamarine colour is distinctive, and it is fed by glacial streams. You will see fisherman perched on the water's edge, and birds circling above the water which beautifully reflects the valley around it.

Moiry Glacier

At the far end of the reservoir, in the crux of the valley is an ancient and beautiful glacier, crawling slowly down to meet the valley floors.

Glacier Lakes

Fed by run-off from the glacier are a collection of smaller natural lakes with stone walkways between them. The reflections of the glacier in these waters is ethereal, it is crystal clear before a slight breeze corrupts the image with ripples of water.

S'équiper

As well as the appropriate shoes and layered clothing for the changeable weather and other essentials, you should consider walking poles, UV sunglasses and at least factor 30 suncream. The sun is bright and high UV in the higher Alps and the snow can reflect it and intensify the exposure.

Pretty turquoise water and mountain views on the first half with multiple streams/waterfalls (two of which particularly lovely) on the second half.
