Walk from Termini to the Cape of the Sorrento Peninsular, and then embrace a steep, rocky climb up Monte San Constanzo. There are superb views on offer throughout.

Having already walked along the Amalfi Coast you will have seen the Sorrento Peninsular jutting into the Mediterranean, pointing its long, bony finger towards the Isle of Capri. Today you are walking to the end of this peninsular – its fingernail, so to speak.

The cape of Punta Campanella has great historical importance. The footpath you walk on follows a section of Roman Pavement known as Via Minerva, which led worshippers to a Roman Temple, built as early as 200 B.C., to pay homage to the Goddess of Minerva/Athena. While the temple is gone, the crumbling ruins of a 16th century watchtower continue to guard this important strategic location straddling the Bay of Naples and the Amalfi Coast.

Spectacular views to Capri’s eastern cliffs dramatically rising from the sea follow you throughout, and only improve with the leg-pumping ascent to Monte San Constanzo. By the top, the deep blue of the Med will envelop 270° around you.

Note de l'auteur

With no options to buy food or drink after leaving Termini why not prepare a picnic to eat at the Punta Campanella. The views are great, and with your back to the watchtower it is one of the only opportunities for shade on a hot day.

Consignes de sécurité

There are some exposed and unfenced edges throughout the walk; be careful and remain on the path.

There are several stretches where you must walk on the road as there is no pavement. Walk on the left side facing the oncoming traffic, unless there is a verge separated by line-markings that provides space to walk on.

Much of the path is rocky. Bear in mind these may be slippery when wet, place your feet with care, and use the handrail, where one is provided.

Points of Interest

Punta Campanella Tower

These waters are heavily trafficked by boats ferrying passengers between Capri and the mainland, but this volume of maritime traffic is not new. Straddling the Bay of Naples and the Amalfi Coast, scores of boats have navigated this stretch of water over the years, giving the stone tower its important defensive position. This current tower was built in 1566 to replace an earlier one from 1334.

Roman Road

The Romans used large stone blocks to pave the way from Nocera to the sanctuary of Minvera at the end of the Cape. This was an important site of worship as early as 200 BC. Today much of the path has been rebuilt, or damaged during the construction of the modern lighthouse, however fading signposts will alert you to the sections of Roman road that remain.

Food and Drink

After leaving Termini there are no opportunities to buy food or drink, or to refill your water bottles, so be sure to bring enough provisions for the hike.

Termini Bus Stop

Itinéraire

0.00km – Your bus will drop you off in Termini. Standing in a car park, facing the church and a tabacchi, TURN RIGHT to walk along the road. After 50 metres, TURN RIGHT onto Via Campanella following the sign from Punta Campanella.

0.20km – As the road forks with a large map ahead, BEAR RIGHT to continue heading downhill on the road (Via Campanella), and following the sign for Punta Campanella.

0.43km – As the road ahead turns into a ‘No Through Road’, TURN RIGHT sharply, still following a sign for Punta Campanella.

0.78km – CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON as the paved road ends, and becomes a cobbled road, made from rocky slabs. After 400 metres CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON, passing the ‘No Entry’ sign (which applies to cars but not walkers). Remain on this road ignoring all side roads and paths.

1.50km – With a shrine on your left, CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON to pass around the gate and continue downhill.

2.60km - CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON as the cobbled road ends; you are now walking on a section of old Roman Road. The path heads steeply downhill.

3.00km - CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON heading downhill. Ignore the gravel road bearing left. Once you have visited the cape, this left path is the route will you take to climb San Costanzo and return to Termini.

3.20km – Once at the end of the path, TURN RIGHT to head down the steps to the lighthouse and tower. Be careful of exposed cliffs and edges around the headland. Once you have explored the headland, return the way you came for 300 metres.

3.60km – TURN RIGHT sharply onto the rocky path. After 200 metres, TURN LEFT as the major path appears to continue ahead. There will be a painted cross and ‘NO’ written on the floor. You are turning left onto the muddy path heading uphill. This turn is easy to miss, so look for the ‘NO’ on the floor, and check the map regularly as you approach it. On your right you will have a view to a beautiful and secluded bay.

4.20km – BEAR LEFT at the vague fork on the path. There is a slight scramble up some of the rocks, and you may need to use your hands to assist you in places. The rocks along the footpath have paint on, to guide you along the correct path.

4.50km – The path forks, but both forks have red paint on, and will soon join up again, so feel free to take either route. This happens again after 300 metres.

5.00km – At the more major fork, BEAR RIGHT onto the uphill rocky path. There will be a plaque on a nearby rock, informing you that a left turn goes to Termini, while a right turn to S. Constanzo. After 100 metres BEAR RIGHT as the path forks again.

5.30km – As the path forks, BEAR RIGHT to remain on the flat path and to head directly to the woodland ahead. Ignore the left path which heads up to the summit, even though there is a dot of paint on one of the rocks.

5.60km – After passing a cave, be careful on the short, rocky climb into the woodland.

5.80km – BEAR LEFT from the woodland, then TURN RIGHT to walk along the road. After 200 metres, TURN RIGHT to climb the rocky and muddy path back into the woodland, with the wooden handrail on your right.

6.10km – At a T-junction at the top of the steps, TURN LEFT to continue climbing on the steps.

6.40km – From the white building at the top of the hill enjoy a fantastic panoramic view, taking in Versuvius, Capri, the Amalfi Coast, and Naples. After this, return to the road the same way you climbed up.

6.70km – When you reach the road again, TURN RIGHT, then immediately TURN LEFT to head downhill on the rocky slope. After 200 metres CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON to cross a road and continue downhill.

6.90km – TURN RIGHT at the road, then TURN LEFT after 20 metres. After 50 metres, at another road, TURN LEFT than immediately TURN RIGHT.

7.10km – BEAR LEFT to continue heading downhill, ignoring the upright slope on your right.

7.20km - CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON, heading downhill on the steps, ignoring the left turn onto the road. After 100 metres, as the path emerges onto the road, TURN RIGHT to walk along the road towards Termini.

7.50km – Finish at the Termini bus stop. Why not grab a gelato while you wait for the bus?

S'équiper

Sturdy hiking boots and a waterproof/wind-break layer are required. Walking poles will be a big advantage on some of these ascents and descents.

Ensure your phone is fully charged; if you doubt the battery will last throughout the hike, it might be beneficial to bring a power bank.

Make sure you bring enough water. It is recommended to drink 0.75 litres per 1 hour of hiking.

Be sure to bring plenty of sun cream and a healthy respect for the sun.
