Smugglers coves, with colourful names such as Ralph’s Cupboard pepper the coast. Cliffs, dunes, and estuaries all contribute to a wonderful day of walking.

Pass the interestingly named Hell's Mouth and keep your eyes open for nesting seabirds and seals along the coves. After Gwithian, choose to follow either the beach or dune paths, but be sure to keep a close eye out for waymarking if choosing the dune route.

Consignes de sécurité

Please take care while walking along the coastal path as some sections can be narrow and may have exposed cliff-edge walking. If any erosion has taken place a diversion will have been put in place so please follow these diversion details and signs where necessary.

Guidebook/ Map

If you wish to carry a hardcopy map, you can print off the daily maps directly from our app. However, if you wish to look at a map, we would recommend purchasing the guidebook Trailblazer's Cornwall Coast Path: SW Coast Path Part 2 - Bude to Plymouth by Henry Stedman & Joel Newton - this has daily maps with added information and guidance on the trial and the surrounding area.

Itinéraire

*** To help you follow the route with confidence we have provided these route notes to help you. The South West Coast Path is well waymarked, but we strongly suggest that you follow the GPS tracks in the Macs Adventure smartphone app to ensure you have a safe, enjoyable and problem-free day.  The daily maps can also be printed from the web version of the app should you wish to take paper copies with you. ***

The first 8-mile stretch of today's walk is nearly all on the clifftop through gorse and shrub with only a narrow path to walk on. Once you reach Hudder Cove and the spectacularly named Hell’s Mouth you are well rewarded as the cliffs are filled with nesting birds and grey seals breed in the caves below Navax Point.

Passing Godrevy Point, the path cuts off the coast and follows a long stretch of road into Gwithian.

For the last 4-mile stretch you have the choice of either walking along the beach or taking the official coast path through the dunes. Although it is continually up and down, the walk through the dunes is actually quite pleasant. It is almost like a game of connecting the dots as you follow the acorn posts with their yellow arrows from dune to dune. Though the posts are not always easy to find, if you keep roughly a straight line and an eye on the map, you shouldn’t go far wrong.

The last part of this section, from Hayle Towans the path goes through an industrial area before your arrival in Hayle for your overnight.

*** This is the end of our Portreath to Hayle route. Please use your included documentation to find your overnight accommodation. For those doing one of our shorter/longer walking itineraries you may be walking onward to overnight in St Ives - Please move onto the next route in the Macs App which is Hayle to St Ives ***

S'équiper

Sturdy hiking boots, layered clothing items and a waterproof/wind-break layer may all be required. The weather in the south is usually better than the rest of the UK and temperatures can sore, especially in the summer months. Make sure to check the weather before you go to see if you need suncream or a waterproof layer, as the weather can change quickly.

Ensure your phone is fully charged; if you doubt the battery will last throughout the hike, it could be beneficial to bring a power bank.

Take plenty of water for the days walk - especially if a high temperature in the summer.
