Climb into the heart of Triglav National Park, finishing in Planika mountain hut, which cowers under the summit of Triglav mountain, and offers a spectacular panorama.

After a short section through woodland you’ll ascend through a rocky valley which feels as though you are climbing into the jaws of nature! You are now fully engulfed by Triglav National Park with views to mountains in every direction, though it is the spectacle straight ahead that is most captivating – Triglav. It is believed every Slovene should stand atop Triglav in their lifetime and thus this walk adopts all the significance of a pilgrimage.

From Vodnikov Dom - perfectly situated for a lunch stop - you will see the figure of Planika Mountain Hut, high above you yet still cowering in the shadow of Triglav’s rocky peak. It is the only man-made addition to the landscape which makes it seem out of place. Nonetheless, you’ll be glad to reach this welcoming hut which will provide your overnight accommodation, and evening and breakfast meals.

Note de l'auteur

You may feel tempted to attempt Triglav itself, especially after meeting many climbers heading up/coming back from the summit, but please bear in mind this is an exposed and technical route, only suitable for those with the correct equipment.

Consignes de sécurité

Some of the path is along rocky steps; be careful as these may be slippery, especially when wet.

There are some exposed edges; be sure to read instructions carefully, stick to the main path, and don’t wander close to the edge. Use handrails where provided.

In early spring/summer there may still be patches of snow. Walk around where it is possible, and otherwise place your feet carefully and use walking poles if you have them.

This route is above 2,400 metres so bear in mind you may feel a shortness of breath and additional muscle fatigue associated with the altitude.

This route involves sections with metal footplates and steep steps carved into the cliff-wall. Take extra care in these areas, hold the handrail provided, and bear in mind it may be slippery when wet.

Points of Interest

Mount Triglav

Mount Triglav is of central importance to Slovenia. It is the namesake of the country’s only national park. It is the highest mountain in the country (and was also the highest mountain in the former Yugoslavia). It even appears on the Slovenian flag! It is a rite of passage, and every true Slovene should stand on the top once in their lifetime (and endure the bizarre tradition of being ‘spanked on the bottom with a rope’ on their first time ascent.

On this hike you will have a great view of Triglav, and meet many climbers heading to the top! You will sleep in Planika Hut, only 400 metres from the top!

Vodnikov Mountain Hut

Vodnikov Hut is dedicated to Valentin Vodnik, a Slovene priest, journalist and poet, who was born in 1758 and died in 1819. As a poet he found much of his inspiration in the mountains, making regular trips into the alpine regions. He is regarded as Slovenia’s first poet and journalist, and his works reflect a proud sense of Slovene identity.

Planika Mountain Hut

Planika Hut is only 400 metres from the summit of Mount Triglav and is therefore one of the ‘base camps’ for those wishing to reach the lofty peak! The first hut on this site, the Triglav Temple, was built in 1871, but collapsed only 4 years later. The current hut was formally opened in 1992. Boasting a fantastic view, be sure to peek out at sunrise and sunset!

Food and Drink

The only opportunity to buy food or drink comes after 8.5km in the form of Vodnikov mountain hut, so be sure to come prepared with sufficient provisions.

Planika Hut

0.00km – Start in the car park at the entrance to the Pokluka Centre. TURN LEFT to walk along the road towards a second car park and a scattered collection of huts. After 80 metres, TURN LEFT onto the wide gravel road. Remain on this gravel road for 1 kilometre.

1.10km – BEAR LEFT as the gravel road forks in the woodland, following the sign to Triglav and Vodnikov Dom. This path will continue heading uphill.

1.60km – After passing an area with space for car parking on your left, BEAR RIGHT from the gravel road, onto the rocky and root-exposed path signposted to Triglav and Vodnikov Dom. Remain on this path for 2.3 kilometres, ignoring vague side paths.

3.90km – BEAR RIGHT as the path forks, to continue uphill on the rocky path, heading ever-deeper into the mountains. Ignore the left turn to Planina Kon Jscice. Stick to the main path following the red and white blazes of paint, and ignoring the shortcuts.

4.10km – After climbing uphill with a riverbed (probably dry) on your right, you will reach a wide grassy plateau. TURN LEFT as the path forks to walk along a wide gravel footpath. After 100 metres, as you begin climbing towards the mountain pass, ignore the many fractured paths and keep to the main track which is marked with paint and has wooden steps to reinforce the path.

5.00km – The top of the mountain pass (Studorski Preval) reveals a window into a new valley, with cascading rock cliffs on your left and steep grassy and forested slopes on your right. CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON to begin a slight downhill. You will see the path contouring along the mountain slopes. Look left to get a distant glimpse to Lake Bohinj, still 3 days away!

7.60km – At an upright tree-stump with two faded yellow plaques attached, BEAR RIGHT following the sign to Vodnikov Dom painted on a nearby rock, and ignore the two left turns. Soon after emerging from the woods you will begin to see the mountain hut ahead.

8.50km – You have arrived at Vodnikov mountain hut, which makes a good stop for lunch. CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON to pass the main hut on your left, and then CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON along the well-established path, ignoring uphill turns on your right, and downhill turns on your left. On a clear day you will enjoy superb views to Planika hut and Triglav ahead.

9.00km – Be careful on an exposed section with a fixed metal handrail. After 500 metres there is a section of steep steps carved into the rock. Use the handrail where one is provided and bear in mind rocks may be slippery when wet.

9.60km – The route crosses some featureless rocky areas where the path may be difficult to follow, particularly in low visibility. Keep following the painted markings and, if necessary, check the map regularly.

10.100km – After a short descent onto a saddle, BEAR RIGHT at the first rusty signpost, and then after 30 metres, TURN LEFT at the red signpost following the sign to Dom Planika. Ignore the immediate right turn signposted to Dom Triglavski.

11.60km – Finish at Planika mountain hut, where you will spend the night. If the weather allows, why not sit on the terrace and watch the climbers tackling the precipitious final 400 metres to the peak of Triglav.

Such is the way of hiking in the mountains that you need to be prepared for all seasons and weathers; sturdy hiking boots, warm clothes and a waterproof/wind-break layer are all required, as is plenty of sun-cream and a healthy respect for the sun.

Walking poles will be a big advantage on some of these ascents and descents.

Ensure your phone is fully charged; if you doubt the battery will last throughout the hike it might be beneficial to bring a power bank.

This walk is isolated with few opportunities to buy food or water so be sure to bring enough with you.
