This rugged coast of little coves and jagged headlands has been the graveyard of many ships. Local legends, expansive views and the three miles of sand at Watergate Bay are real highlights.

Guidebook/ Map

If you wish to carry a hardcopy map, you can print off the daily maps directly from our app. However, if you wish to look at a map, we would recommend purchasing the guidebook Trailblazer's Cornwall Coast Path: SW Coast Path Part 2 - Bude to Plymouth by Henry Stedman & Joel Newton - this has daily maps with added information and guidance on the trial and the surrounding area.

Itinéraire

*** To help you follow the route with confidence we have provided these route notes to help you. The South West Coast Path is well waymarked, but we strongly suggest that you follow the GPS tracks in the Macs Adventure smartphone app to ensure you have a safe, enjoyable and problem-free day.  The daily maps can also be printed from the web version of the app should you wish to take paper copies with you. ***

The first part of this 6-mile stretch is easy once the initial climb out of Mawgan Porth is over with. There is a minor descent to Beacon Cove, a climb to the Iron Age fort at Griffin’s Point, and a short descent to Stem Cove. It’s then plain sailing to Watergate Bay.

Watergate Beach looks inviting but the path follows the cliffs above it to arrive at the bay. Where gaps in the gorse permit, there are fine views over the beach. The coastal path remains on the cliffs until the first buildings begin to appear. You can walk along the pavement down the hill to Porth Beach but it’s more pleasant to take the cliff path out to Trevelgue Head where a narrow footbridge leads across to the island on which there is Cornwall’s largest Iron Age forts.

The route from Porth to Newquay is mostly on tarmac passing Lusty Glaze Beach. Once into the town you can take the old tramway, now a pedestrian walkway, and work your way along above Newquay's beaches to the harbor and your overnight accommodation.

*** This is the end of our Mawgan Porth to Newquay route. Please use your included documentation to find your overnight accommodation. For those doing one of our shorter/longer or tailored walking itineraries you may be walking onward to overnight in Perranporth - Please move onto the next route in the Macs App which is Newquay to Perranporth ***

S'équiper

Sturdy hiking boots, layered clothing items, and a waterproof/wind-break layer may all be required. The weather in the south is usually better than the rest of the UK and temperatures can sore, especially in the summer months. Make sure to check the weather before you go to see if you need suncream or a waterproof layer, as the weather can change quickly.

Ensure your phone is fully charged; if you doubt the battery will last throughout the hike, it could be beneficial to bring a power bank.

Take plenty of water for the day's walk - especially if a high temperature in the summer.
