Leave the wine paradise of Kesten or Osann-Monzel by way of the Baroque church of St. Nikolaus and make your way through extensive vineyards to a viewpoint where you can catch a glimpse of the week’s objective; Bernkastel Kues and the emblematic castle ruins of Burg Landshut. Steep vineyards and jagged rock dominate the landscape here. Continue through woodland to reach Bernkastel Kues, your final destination.

An historic market town filled with colourful half-timbered houses, it’s the perfect place to finish your tour. Enjoy a well-earned meal and toast a glass of Riesling or locally brewed beer to your Moselle adventure.

St. Nicholas Church - The late baroque country church of St. Nicholas in Monzel is a typical quarry stone construction for the Moselle and was built at the end of the 18th century.  Admire an altarpiece made of sandstone from the 15./16. century inside.

Lieser Castle  - A well known castle in the region which has been expanding from a Dutch entrepreneur to a luxury hotel since 2010, is meant to be.  The Wilhelminian-style castle built in the midst of a park is a real eye-catcher.

St-Anna-Chapel - The chapel with the impressive mosaic on the outside was rebuilt in 1890 and is the last station of the Way of the Cross.  The predecessor building dates from 1615 and was the Elector's waiter Georg Mörtzer and his wife Margare- tha Zorn from Zeltingen.

Burg Landshut - Perched majestically atop a rocky ledge some 60 metres wide and overlooking Bernkastel are the ruins of Burg Landshut. The castle ruins are one of the oldest buildings on the Mosel. It was constructed in the year 1276 and, according to the latest findings, built upon a fort dating back to the 4th or 5th century.

Arriving at the top, from the castle keep we have a fascinating and unique view over the entire Mosel valley. Today, the castle interior houses a restaurant. Those who wish can climb up to the top of the tower for the price of 1€ and enjoy the panorama.

Arrivée

Bernkastel-Kues

Itinéraire

START your hike to Bernkastel-Kues at the St. Nicholas Church.

Follow the signed route as it ascends through steep vineyards and past rugged slate cliffs which dominate the landscape, on forest trails, climb from the Brauneberg mountain down into the valley where you cross the Mülheimer Bridge

If you wish,  take a detour to the wine villages of Maring-Noviand and Lieser (trails to them are marked).  Walk through the village, the Moselsteig takes you past  Helenenkloster, from where you can look over the town of Lieser and its most striking building, Lieser Castle

In the Goldbachtal Valley follow the path to Andel.  The trail remains at the edge of the forest and guides you to the Andeler Path which winds its way through the forest slope.  The trail descends as it winds its way past high schist rocks and barbecue hut.  The forest path ends at the St-Anna-Chapel just below Burg Landshut

From here a path ascends to the castle, a  youth hostel and to Monzelfeld. Once you finished a cup of coffee and enjoyed the view from the Burg Landshut, descend the stairs to reach the centre of Bernkastel-Kues, where your walk ends today.
