This is a tale of two walks, using Nerano as a base with which to strike out to Montalto Watchtower and the nearby ruins of a disused mining industry to the west, and then to the beach at Marina Del Cantone in the east.

This is a walk of two halves, using Nerano to explore one of the quieter and less-visited stretches of the Amalfi Coast. Its relative solitude when compared with the tourist hotspots of Amalfi and Positano highlights its isolation and is no indictment of the area’s heavenly beauty.

If you have already completed the Punta Campanella hike you will almost certainly have gazed longlingly at a secluded bay of turquoise waters on your right – that’s where the first half of this hike takes you today. In addition to the beauty, there’s the history. Between 1918 and 1956 this remote headland was a hive of mining activity, and the scattering of abandoned buildings and infrastructure that remain testify to this. Nearby is the Montalto Watchtower, which would have fended off Saracen raids and invasions.

Having returned to Nerano, the path weaves its way between houses, headed steeply downhill, before erupting onto the beach at Marina Del Cantone. The walk continues for 700 metres to another, more secluded beach at Recommone. Why not enjoy a relaxing afternoon here? Either beach is deserving of a swim and a stop in one of the nearby restaurants, before returning to Sorrento by bus.

Note de l'auteur

Check the bus timetable before leaving the beach. Estimate (conservatively) how long it will take you to return to Nerano, and therefore what time you must leave the beach. This is preferable to reaching Nerano and discovering you have an hour to wait for the bus, which could have been spent on the beach!

Consignes de sécurité

There are some exposed and unfenced edges throughout the walk; be careful and remain on the path.

There are several stretches where you must walk on the road as there is no pavement. Walk on the left side facing the oncoming traffic, unless there is a verge separated by line-markings that provides space to walk on.

Much of the path is rocky. Bear in mind these may be slippery when wet, place your feet with care, and use the handrail, where one is provided.

Points of Interest

Montalto Tower

Stone towers such as Montalto Tower which you will pass on today’s walk have dotted the Amalfi Coastline for nearly 1,000 years and have played a vital role in the region’s defence, fending off invasions from Saracens, Barbarians and Turks. These towers were manned by knights who, on sighting an enemy vessel, would sound a warning bell or gallop on horseback, to summon support. At night they might light a fire atop the tower.

Mining Infrastructure

The limestone geology which has resulted in the dramatic karst scenery and prominent sea stacks, has also played an important role in the local economy. Between 1918 to 1956 a lime quarry operated on Jeranto Bay. This walk passes through the industrial relics of these mines, and is today maintained by the FAI, which is the Italian National Trust. Among the buildings you will discover a plaque to those miners who died in this dangerous occupation.

Marina Del Cantone

The secluded beach at Marino Del Cantone has been described as a ‘refuge for Italian locals and travellers-in-the-know’. For now, until this ‘secret getaway’ becomes more well-known, you can be sure of a relaxing day on the beach, with a host of beachside restaurants and cafes to provide whatever refreshments you need. A short walk away is Recommone Beach, accessible only on foot or boat, and therefore even less established. Take your pick of which beach you want to soak in some Vitamin D!

Food and Drink

There are a few shops to buy snacks, sandwiched and drinks in Nerano, where you start, finish, and return to after 4.6 kilometres.

There are restaurants with fantastic sea views after 5.9 and 6.6 kilometres, in Marina Del Cantone and Recommone.

Nerano Bus Stop

0.00km – Your bus will drop you off in Nerano, near a collection of small shops and a church. Start facing the church and the car parking, then TURN RIGHT to walk along the road. Walk on the right side, to avoid surprising vehicles coming around the sharp bend. After 50 metres BEAR RIGHT onto the uphill footpath, just before the road bends left.

0.20km - CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON along the cobbled path, ignoring the uphill steps on your right.

1.50km – As the path forks BEAR RIGHT to head downhill on the muddy path, following the sign for the Beach. After 100 metres CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON downhill on the crumbling steps, ignoring a left turn.

1.70km – As the path forks with a wooden handrail and a few pools of water ahead, BEAR LEFT. After 10 metres, TURN RIGHT at the T-junction. After 50 metres, CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON at the bottom of a set of steps.

1.90km – CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON passing several buildings on your left and ignoring a right turn towards the beach. The path continues through woodland.

2.20km – The path fades as it reaches the cliffs ahead. After enjoying the glimpse of Capri, turn around and return the way you came; after 400 metres BEAR RIGHT up the steps you descend before, then after 50 metres TURN RIGHT.

2.90km – After passing some stone buildings, TURN RIGHT past several picnic benches. After 30 metres, just before passing the last picnic benches, TURN LEFT to walk on the mud steps uphill. At the top of the mud steps, after 10 metres, TURN RIGHT to walk along the wide, established path.

3.00km – After passing through a gap in the dry wall, TURN LEFT onto the established mud path, then after 50 metres, TURN RIGHT to walk uphill to the tower.

3.10km – From the tower, turn around and return the way you came. After 100 metres, ignore the left turn you walked on earlier, and BEAR RIGHT, sticking to the wider, muddy path.

3.50km – BEAR RIGHT to continue heading uphill on the steps, ignoring a gate and information board on your left. After 200 metres, BEAR RIGHT as the path forks, to continue heading uphill, and passing a stone building on your right. This path will return to Nerano.

4.90km – Upon reaching the road, BEAR LEFT to walk back to where you started, and then TURN RIGHT to head downhill on a staircase, following the path as it passes the playground and church on your left.

5.00km – BEAR LEFT to continue walking along the downhill slope, ignoring the uphill steps on your right. After 100 metres, at the road, CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON to cross over the road and continue downhill on the lane.

5.20km – BEAR RIGHT to continue along the downhill slope, ignoring the steps on your left. After 300 metres CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON to cross over the road and continue along the paved footpath on the far side. After 500 metres CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON, passing a car park on your left.

6.00km – Having passed the car park on your left and reached the road, CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON to cross the road and descend the steps towards the Spiaggia (the beach), immediately passing a rusty anchor on your left. The paved path continues in front of several restaurants and with the beach on your right.

6.20km - CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON over some metal steps, and then BEAR RIGHT to walk on the beach. After passing a restaurant with a terrace on stilts, TURN LEFT to climb some concrete steps and then BEAR RIGHT to walk on the footpath.

6.80km – As the path forks besides the stone tower, BEAR RIGHT to continue heading downhill. After 100 metres, at the bottom of a set of steps, you will end up in Recommone with some nice restaurants and a secluded beach. Why not stop for lunch in a restaurant or go for a swim, before returning to Nerano the way you came. It is recommended to check the bus timetable before leaving the beach; buses are generally hourly, and it is nicer to wait on the beach than by the road.

7.30km – Remember to BEAR LEFT as the path forks near the tower.

8.10km – Having continued along the beach and passed the rusty anchor on your right, CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON to cross the road, and continue uphill with the car park on your right. After 500 metres, CONTINUE STRAIGHT ON to cross over the road, and continue up the ‘No Through Road’, which leads into a narrow path after 200 metres.

9.20km – Finish in Nerano, where you began the hike, and return to Sorrento by bus.

S'y rendre en train, en voiture ou en vélo

Sturdy hiking boots and a waterproof/wind-break layer are required. Walking poles will be a big advantage on some of these ascents and descents.

Ensure your phone is fully charged; if you doubt the battery will last throughout the hike, it might be beneficial to bring a power bank.

Make sure you bring enough water. It is recommended to drink 0.75 litres per 1 hour of hiking.

Be sure to bring plenty of sun cream and a healthy respect for the sun.
