This is a high alpine pass commencing on a glacial lake shore with a relaxed climb up to a prominent outcrop, then descending to the alpine railway station. The footing is gravel track leading to well-marked paths which become stony and zig zag frequently.

Take a short ride on the UNESCO listed Bernina Bahn, a train line which equals the Glacier Express for stunning views.  Getting off at Bernina Hospiz station, follow the easy circular walking route skirting Lago Bianco to Alp Grum and hike up to the mountain hut at Sassat Mason. The peace and tranquillity of this area is inspiring. Return to Pontresina by train. Ospizio Bernina/Bernina Hospiz Station Is a stop on request only station, listen for the announcements, one of which will be in English.

Information and timetables about the trains can be found here: www.sbb.ch

Note de l'auteur

The Sassal Mason hut is well placed for a lunch break (Closed for Summer 2021). They offer warm and cold food including local specialities. On a clear day the views from here of the surrounding lakes is fantastic. Always check opening hours and carry food/snacks in case of unplanned closures.
