Burlington City Loop
Your ride today will take you straight into the middle of Lake Champlain as you ride the well-known and renowned Burlington Bike Path out towards South Hero Island. Begin by heading down to the lake and hugging the lakeshore, following signs to the bike ferry and causeway. Your path will take you over a bike bridge or two, along a swim beach, and past many boats moored just a few meters out from the majestic shores of Lake Champlain. Use caution as you ride! The bikeway is incredibly beloved and used for all different types of recreation; it also intersects with many small roads, perpendicular to the lakeshore, so remain alert as you cross.
You have options here - either turn around at the first bridge on the causeway (required if the bridge is closed for maintenance as in 2018), and return the way you came. Then follow the rest of this route to tour one of Burlington’s scenic parks, and glimpse new parts of the city.
Alternatively, continue along the Island Line Bike Path, take the bike ferry if you'd like to cross "the cut", and make South Hero Island your destination. To get back, simply retrace your route along the bike path. Note: the bike ferry is $8 roundtrip (cash) and runs 10 am - 6 pm every day in summer and Fri-Sun in the fall.
Finish your ride on the pedestrian piazza of Church Street, and don’t miss an opportunity to grab a bite to eat or a cone at Ben & Jerry’s!

Consignes de sécurité
The Burlington Bike Path is a popular spot for walkers, runners, serious cyclists, and first-time cyclists, alike. Use caution, and always use verbal commands to let someone know you are passing (“on your left!”). The path intersects with many small roads, so make sure you obey all traffic signs (stop signs, especially) as not all motorists know to look out for cyclists along the route.
You will be most visible when wearing high-visibility clothing, such as a neon cycling vest.
Please keep both hands on the bike at all times.
Always wear your helmet when riding.
Be cautious when approaching railroad tracks. Consider stopping to walk your bike across the tracks. Some track crossings note that trains do not blow their whistle as they cross.
Always ensure you carry enough water, especially as there are stretches where water is less readily available.
Painted lines on the road become slippery when they are wet.
Obey traffic laws in all areas. This means riding on the right-hand side of the road, and braking at all stop signs and stop lights.
Carefully monitor the condition of the shoulder as debris may appear after accidents, rain, or wind.
Use verbal and non-verbal commands to let others you may be riding with and vehicles know when you intend to stop, slow down, or turn.
Control your speed on all descents.
