From the beautiful valley of Patterdale follow the path in the direction of Shap, leaving the Lake District behind. Once out of the Lake District the wayfinding becomes easier and the gradients become gentler as you wind your way towards Shap. Don't let this fool you though, on today’s walk it is the distance which leaves you tired, and with no shops or pubs along the way to refuel, don't forget to bring plenty of water and food.

There are over 1300 m of ascent today, as you walk over the Kidsty Pike and follow this descent steeply down to Haweswater.

We had fine weather which reached 29 degrees in late August. This was a long tough walk and due to the heat we had to stop and rest a few times. The steep downhill from Kidsty Pike was tough but the walk from the bottom seemed to never end. Don't underestimate the degree of difficulty of this walk.

This a long day full of uphill slog then a steep descent and many long winding pathways into Shap. Exhausting but rewarding at the top with 360 degree views. A fitting farewell to the Lakes District- a journey which will not be forgotten.
