Today's stage meanders from Alpe Grüm down into the Italian-influenced Val Poschiavo. Start your day hiking towards the milky-blue Palü Lake. In the high valley of Cavaglia, take a detour to admire the glacier garden, where the glacier water has carved shapes into the rock. From Cavaglia the hiking trail winds its way over the idyllically located Maiensassen and down into the lush green valley of Poschiavo.

Author’s recommendation

The first section of today's hike is part of the green electricity path, which has information boards about the generation of hydropower, sustainable energy, nature and history in the region.

In Cavaglia, it is worth visiting the glacier garden and the Orrido di Cavaglia gorge trail. Follow the path carved out by meltwater which created spiral-walled hollow shapes in the rock, continue further to explore the Cavagliasco Gorge.

Safety information

Allow enough time to complete your walk as the times provided are solely walking times, and breaks have not been included.

Parts of the path are for shared use, for hikers and mountain bikers. Stay alert and make sure to make space for the other people using the trail.

Some of the fields may have cows in; they are not aggressive but take care not to startle them, and pass around them with a wide berth.

In early spring/summer there may still be patches of snow. Walk around where it is possible, and otherwise place your feet carefully and use walking poles if you have them.

Turn-by-turn directions

START at Alpe Grüm, descend on the hiking trails No. 30/33 to a fork in the road in the forest. CONTINUE to follow the trail as it leads through the larch and pine forests. CROSS the tracks of the Rhaetian Railway twice. After the second crossing, TURN RIGHT and leave the trail marked with the green signs to follow the ascending trail, direction Palü Lake.

REACH the lake and follow the trail as it descends in parallel with the stream, watch your step as the trail is quite steep. Reach a clearing in the Cavaglia valley. PASS the Cavaglia hydroelectric power station, which is fed by an underground pressurised pipeline from the Palü power station at Lago Palü. Descend into the mountain village. There are a few places to stop for a break and you should plan a visit to the glacier garden.

End the hike in Cavaglia and take the Rhaetian Railway to Poschiavo or CONTINUE, following the trail marker 33. The path snakes its way through the forest, over alpine meadows and mountain pastures, often in parallel with the railway line.

REACH Maiensäss Cadera, where you have another opportunity to shorten the hike or CONTINUE descending. CROSS the railway line multiple times until you REACH the bottom of the valley. The last kilometre is flat and easy as you walk into the centre of Poschiavo.

Follow the main road, TURN LEFT at the first chance to CROSS the stream and reach the historic town centre at Plazzo Centrale. Follow the main road where you will ARRIVE at Hotel Croce Bianco

Equipment

Such is the way of Alpine hiking, that you need to be prepared for all seasons and weathers; sturdy hiking boots, warm clothes and a waterproof/wind-break layer are all required, as is plenty of sun-cream and a healthy respect for the sun.

Walking poles will be a big advantage on some of these ascents and descents.

Ensure your phone is fully charged; if you doubt the battery will last throughout the hike, it might be beneficial to bring a power bank.

This walk is isolated with few opportunities to buy food or water so be sure to bring enough with you.
