Today’s walk is one of the most beautiful in all Lakeland, circumnavigating the peak of Place Fell and following the stunning lakeshore path of Ullswater. The trail initially climbs to the grassy coll of Boredale Hause framed by the  mountains of Place Fell and Angletarn Pikes. The walk ahead down the Boredale glaciated valley is superb and as you descend you experience the magnificent view unfolding ahead. The route turns to follow the lakeside of Ullswater, a real highlight of the day, with unsurpassed views across the quiet waters to the peaks beyond as you walk back to Patterdale.

Author’s recommendation

If you have time at the end of your walk head to Glenridding and jump on one of the "Ullswater Steamers" for a cruise around the lake.

Safety information

Check the weather forecast before setting out and listen to advice locals may offer you. When the route follows a road with no footpath remember to walk on the right hand side so you are facing any oncoming traffic.

Equipment

Along with your usual gear for a day out in the hills remember to pack a wind/waterproof and an extra layer. The weather can change fairly quickly up on the peaks.

Turn-by-turn directions

If you are staying in Glenridding, you will need to walk into Patterdale to begin the walk. Go back to Grisedale Bridge where you turned left to Glenridding the day before and then make your way into the centre of Patterdale.

0.00 km – Starting facing the village shop, TURN RIGHT to follow the main road out of Patterdale. After 400m TURN RIGHT to Side Farm beside the George Starkey Hut. Walk down this track, over the river and go between Side Farm farmhouse and barn.

0.90 km - TURN RIGHT along lane. After 250m go through a gate and turn left through second gate (avoiding private drive) onto open fell. Now bear right on path just above gate which angles up across the hillside past an ancient bench. As you approach Boredale Hause the path swings to the left at a junction of many paths.

2.10 km - Go STRAIGHT AHEAD east for a short distance over the lowest point of the pass to locate the very clear V shaped gully following the main path down Boredale. Initially steep but soon the track is a lovely gentle walk downhill. The track goes through a farm, becomes a road and crosses the river (Boredale Beck) to reach a junction.

6.10 km - BEAR LEFT towards Sandwick. Follow this little road across a bridge and just after where walls give way to open hillside find a signpost for Patterdale 3 1/2 Miles.

7.10 km - TURN LEFT across hillside keeping the wall on your right. Ignore paths left uphill. Stay on obvious path as it follows the wall and then over a footbridge to soon leave the wall and follow the lake shore, sometimes above it and sometimes beside it to reach path junction.

10.70 km – Go STRAIGHT AHEAD (not left) towards the lake shore and follow the path back to Side Farm.

13.00 km - TURN RIGHT and retrace your outward route.

14.00 km – Finish your walk opposite the village shop where you started. If you are staying in Glenridding you will need to walk back the same way that you walked this morning.

Arrival by train, car, foot or bike
