The Stegastein Viewpoint is a popular viewpoint to visit 650m above the fjord. Admire the views here before leaving the tourists behind and continuing up to the summit of Prest, from where you have a panoramic view to the surrounding mountains and the Aurlandsfjord 1363m below. While it is a steep hike up, it is relatively short and the views make it worth the trip.

Turn-by-turn directions

We have booked return tickets on the bus to take you from Flam to Stegastein. Please refer to your bus tickets enclosed in your pack for the exact times.

0.00km - START POINT: Stegastein viewpoint (the shuttle bus will drop you off here)Leaving the viewpoint behind you, continue STRAIGHT AHEAD on the road as it ascends.

0.30 km - Ignore the small gravel road veering right signposted for Turlivegen. Continue STRAIGHT AHEAD follow the road.

0.50 km - Once again ignore the small road on the right next to houses. Continue on road STRAIGHT AHEAD.

0.90 km - BEAR RIGHT onto smaller road signposted for Bjorgo. If you prefer to continue on the road as it bends you can do, both end up at the same place. This is a more pleasant grassy path but it can be boggy/muddy if there has recently been a lot of rain, in which case the road is the preferable choice.

1.10 km - BEAR LEFT onto faint grassy path as it ascends.

1.40 km - BEAR LEFT once again, continuing on faint grassy path as it ascends. You will shortly re-join the road, which you should continue to follow. If you have followed the road around, continue on it.

1.60 km - You will come to a bus stop on your right and a sign with a hiker on it pointing left. Follow it and TURN LEFT into parking place/rest place. Walk to the end of the parking place passing a bench on your left hand side. At the end of the parking you will see a narrow path entering into the scrubland, which you should follow.

1.90 km - Arrive at a fork in the path with three paths to choose from. Continue STRAIGHT AHEAD following the middle path and the red ‘T’ signs painted on rock.

2.00km - Arrive at another fork and BEAR RIGHT following the red ‘T’ sign. Already the beautiful fjord views are opening up on your left.

2.30 km - There is a small cairn on your left marking a viewpoint. Continue on path STRAIGHT AHEAD ascending.

2.60 km - Come to junction in path, TURN RIGHT here and continue to follow the rocky path. The path veering left leads to another view point.

2.90 km - Continue to follow path as it TURNS LEFT. There is a large boulder on your right with the red ‘T’ and several small cairns on your right.

3.00 km - Come to a faint red ‘T’ on right. The path appears to go straight ahead here but it becomes very narrow and very close to the edge! To avoid this, TURN RIGHT onto the rocks (very mild scrambling) and re-join the path that way.

3.10 km - Continue to follow path as it BEARS RIGHT.

3.20 km - There is a cairn to your left, continue on path STRAIGHT AHEAD ascending.

3.30 km - Come to red ‘T’ on jagged rock in front of you. TURN LEFT here following the path and the next red ‘T’s.

3.50 km - You will see two cairns ahead of you. Head for the closer and larger of the two. Continue to follow the path STRAIGHT AHEAD.

3.75 km-ARRIVE at large summit cairn and guestbook (a common occurrence on Norwegian trails and summits!). From here you will have stunning views of the Aurlandsfjord and surrounding mountains.Once you are ready to leave, simply retrace your steps back to the Stegastein viewpoint in time for your return bus journey to Flam.

7.50 km - You have ARRVIED back at the Stegastein viewpoint.
