As you head out of Selkirk, it’s not long before you cross Selkirk Hill which is a haven for wildlife and flowers. Orchids, mountain pansies and harebell can all be spotted in the summer months. The path gradually rises through farmlands and drove roads to Cauldshields Loch where you can get fantastic views over the Eildon Hills. A newly signposted section of the way takes you passed Abbotsford House, where Sir Walter Scot used to live in the 1800’s, and is well worth a visit. From here the route follows the south bank of the river into Melrose.

Please note: There is an ongoing, but infrequent, issue with the water level of Cauldshiels Loch (NW of Cauldshiels Hill) overflowing and flooding the path at it's NW corner where the Border's Abbey Way path touches the lochside.  The council know about the problem, but due to complicated landowner rights they are not able to solve, or signpost a diversion, all the time.  If you find the official route flooded there is an alternative path close by to the West.  We have provided this map and access to our mapping help to help you find an alternative route if needed and get back on track more easily. In the unlikely event that you do encounter any problems do let us know so we can provide all the assistance you need.

Author’s recommendation

Make sure to leave some time for visiting Abbotsford House - the trail now passes very close to the house.
