This first section of the longer walk to Akrotiri is mainly on old mule paths climbing over the hillside, then follows an asphalt road into Pyrgos.

On this route you climb the highest mountain of Santorini, the Profitis Ilias. Before you reach the top you can visit the excavations of Ancient Thira. This was the capital of Santorini in ancient and Roman times. You do not have to be a historian in order to appreciate this site that is situated in a wonderful area. The extra distance from WP3 to the Ancient site is 750 m one way with an additional ascend of 100m via an ancient mule-path you descend to Pyrgos

Nice trail. but the last part of the walk, when the map suggested to leave the serpentine after the military fort, was better to be done by using an old artificial stone road, instead of walking straight through the rocks.
