Today's walk takes you to Sölden. On the first part of this walk, you’ll ascend to the plateau between Brand and Burgstein, pause to take in the fantastic panoramic views before crossing the suspension bridge which is 200 metres above the ground. From here, the trail winds steeply back down to Ötztaler Ache. With the river in full view, the path meanders down through small hamlets into the bustling resort of Sölden.

Author’s recommendation

The first part of this leg is spectacular but challenging, kicking off with a 700-metre ascent. For your safety, you must have a head for heights.

Once you’ve arrived back in the valley, there are multiple points along the Ötztaler Talstraße where you can hop on a bus to shorten the walk.

Safety information

In rainy weather, the narrow trails can be muddy and slippery. Make sure to wear closed and sturdy footwear with plenty of grip.

For the first part of this leg in particular, you must be confident walking at heights and steady on your feet. Concentrate on what you’re doing and keep your eyes on the path. The first section to Huben, you’ll cross a pedestrian bridge suspended at a height of around 200 metres.

Keep a close eye on the weather forecast and don’t go into the mountains if a storm is predicted.

Turn-by-turn directions

0.0 km – Start at Längenfeld Kirchplatz bus stop. Cross the street towards the church and then TURN onto the narrow road to the LEFT of the church. Follow this road to the end, where a small path next to a power distribution box leads steeply uphill into the forest (signposted: Brandalm). Follow this trail uphill until it joins a wide forest path. Here, TURN RIGHT and follow the forest path to Brandalm.

1.5 km – From Brandalm, keep following the signs towards Hängebrücke/Burgstein.

3.3 km – At the Dorfstüberl restaurant in Burgstein, TURN LEFT (signposted: Platter Grube)

3.9 km – At the fork towards Gamskogel (signpost 189), walk STRAIGHT ON towards Platter Grube.

4.2 km – Follow the curve of the path across a stream; soon afterwards, you will reach a small clearing. Near the entrance to this clearing, take the narrow path to the LEFT to climb steeply uphill to the hunting lodge.

5.7 km – The small hunting lodge is the highest point of today’s leg. Follow the signs for Huben, first along a narrow path then later along a forest trail that winds its way downhill.

Warning: From here, the route takes you very steeply down a narrow path. When wet, this section can be particularly slippery due to roots and stones.

9.5 km – Once you’ve reached the main road and the Ötztaler Ache in the valley, keep to the left of the river and the road, following the path further and further into the valley towards Sölden.

12.0 km – After Bruggen, TURN RIGHT and cross the main road via the underpass before following the trail towards Aschbach.

13.2 km – At Aschbach, just before the bridge over the Ache, take the path to the LEFT to the bus stop and cross the main road very carefully. Follow the exit sign for Aschbach to the RIGHT, walking towards the welcome sign. When you reach the sign, TURN LEFT and follow the “Radwanderweg Sölden” trail to the LEFT.

14.3 km – At the hairpin bend by the stream, follow the signpost for Sölden to the RIGHT. Keep following the path towards Rechenau and continue on the footpath into the centre of Sölden.

21.4 km – Today’s leg ends at Sölden Tourist Information Centre.
