Descend through the Karwendel valley whilst admiring the peaks surrounding you. Follow a wide easy path which descends steadily through the mountain forests, following along the alpine streams, making your way into the valley to join the Isar river. The river accompanies you for the rest of your walk into Scharnitz, the western gateway into the Karwendel mountains.

Author’s recommendation

On the banks of the Karwendel stream there are some nice picnic spots.

If you are staying the is Isar Lodge, they, unfortunately, do not have a restaurant and do not offer dinner. We recommend you eat in one of the huts on that day as other restaurants and the town of Scharnitz are 3km away. If you are staying in Mittenwald you will need to catch the train from Scharnitz to Mittenwald

Safety information

Today you may be walking past a few different areas where cows graze. Although generally very docile and used to walkers, keep your distance and never turn your back on a cow that is behaving strangely or aggressive. Be particularly vigilant around cows with calves.

Always allow plenty of time for your hike. The walking times indicated do not include breaks. Breaks for photos and a rest need to be added to the specified times.

Make sure you find out about current weather conditions and keep an eye on weather changes. Thunderstorms can gather very quickly in the Alps.

Do not leave the designated hiking trails!

Turn-by-turn directions

0.00 km – START at Karwendelhaus, FOLLOW the trail direction Scharnitz,  TURN LEFT onto a narrow, steep trail towards "Scharnitz - nur für Fußgänger (only for pedestrians)", immediately TURN RIGHT and walk across the alpine meadow towards St. Wendelin Almen, with its small chapel. The trail crosses the road a few times.

0.4 km – PASS the Wendelinus chapel, join the wide road again. TURN LEFT and follow the track through the pasture gate and CONTINUE on the trail.

1.1 km – After the bend, a path crosses the track. Leave the trail and TURN LEFT, following the narrow path to shorten a large bend in the track. The shady trail is easy to follow and finally meets the road again a little further down. TURN LEFT at the road and descend along it.

From here, follow the road and ignore all the paths turning off it.

4.7 km - Pass the Angeralmen.

6.3 km - Pass a game feeding station.

8 km - REACH a clearing, on the right behind the trees spot a small hut. The banks of the Karwendelbach stream are a good place for a break.

13.5 km - Turn off the trail, direction GH Wiesenhof/Isarlodge:

If you are staying in Scharnitz or Mittenwald, CONTINUE STRAIGHT

If you are staying at the Isarlodge, TURN LEFT here and follow the path to the driveway, then TURN LEFT again until you reach the Isar Lodge.

If you are staying in Scharnitz or Mittenwald follow these instructions:

15.5 km – PASS the viewpoint of the Karwendel Gorge. CONTINUE to follow the descending road. Ignore all paths branching off.

16.5 km - REACH a viewpoint of the Isar. Here the gravel path turns into a tarmac road. Follow the road downhill, spot the houses of Scharnitz in the distance. At the next crossroads, BEAR LEFT until reaching Karwendelstraße.

16.6 km - At the Karwendelstraße, TURN RIGHT and CONTINUE STRAIGHT until the church in Scharnitz.
