From the village of Orahovac a meandering trail ascends through the forest to the ruins of Vranovo Brdo fortress (743m) for great views of the surrounding turquoise coast. Look out for friendly goat herders, you can hear the tinkling of the lead goats bell as the descend the narrow paths.

Enjoy a picnic lunch taking in the views before joining another military path down to the small town of Perast. We highly recommend taking a boat trip over to the very pretty “Our Lady of the Rocks” church dating back to 1484 which sits on a manmade island off the coast of Perast.

This charming little church has some beautifully intricate alter and ceiling frescoes well worth a look. Make your way back over to Perast, where a transfer will take you back to Kotor.

Safety information

There are some road crossings, always be aware of traffic and be sure to use a pavement/sidewalk where possible. Where it isn’t, walk on the right-hand side of the road in the direction of oncoming traffic.

Some of the ground can be uneven, with rocky/pebbly paths. Ensure you have suitable footwear and step cautiously when needed.

Parts of the route follow clifftops, so take care to walk a reasonable distance from the edge - particularly in low visibility.

Although most of the snakes are not poisonous, and many of them are very timid, you will see them. Take care by stopping moving when you see them and keeping a safe distance as it leaves the path to allow you to cross.

There can be quick but fierce thunderstorms, make sure you check the weather before you go out and make sure you know the correct behaviour if you are caught in a storm: https://www.cdc.gov/features/lightning-safety/index.html

Tips and hints

Food and Drink

There are no food and drink spots en route so be sure to pick something up in the morning to have as lunch. There are some nice restaurants in the classy village of Perast.

Points of Interest

Vranovo Brdo view

This old abandoned hill fort, perched on the rocky summit has beautiful views down to the bay of Kotor below. It is a good spot for a lunch break as it is halfway, has great views and ample shade.

Perast

Perast is a small village, traditionally one based on small-scale fishing. Now, it is dotted with excellent restaurants using the harbour to make the most of the excellent views across the bay. The architecture is beautiful, and the style is relaxed yet luxurious.

Our Lady of the Rocks

Our Lady of the Rocks is one of two islets off the coast of Perast in the Bay of Kotor. It is an artificial island that, according to legend, formed over time as seamen laid rocks in the bay every time they returned from a successful voyage. Indeed, every year on July 22, locals continue the tradition by throwing rocks into the sea, widening the islet. The main building on the islet is the Roman Catholic Our Lady of the Rocks Church, which was built in 1632 and renovated in 1722. Inside the church, visitors will find nearly 70 paintings by 17th-century artist Tripo Kokolja, as well as a large marble altar, numerous icons and a votive tapestry embroidered by a woman from nearby Perast over the course of 25 years. The harbour is full of small boats that will take you to visit the island, just wait at the harbour, have a drink and hail one as they come into port.

Equipment

The ground can be uneven, so be sure to wear sturdy walking boots with suitable ankle support.

There are a number of stream crossings where walking poles will make these crossing easier and safer. They also come in handy when crossing uneven ground or making steep descents.

Similar to the Vrmac hike but the summit and descent are slightly overgrown. Remember your swimming stuff again for the lake. We did the boat trip to the island - thought it was ok. You can some nice food in Perast.
