Occasionally you will walk along rural roads and although they are fairly quiet they will get a bit busier coming into Siena, so please take care of the traffic.Tips and hints
Food & Drink ...
Colle di Val D’Elsa has shops and bakeries, most of which are located in the non-historical centre (a short lift journey away), please ask your accommodation for directions to the nearest shop/bakery. There is a water fountain at your drop off point just at Monteriggioni, as well as bars and cafes. Please take a packed lunch with you today as there are no obvious stop offs for lunch along the trail.
Alternative Transport ...
If you wish to skip today's walk there are buses from Colle di Val d'Elsa to Siena. Bus numbers 131 and 130 do this route. The journey takes 30 minutes and they leave a couple of times per hour. You can check schedules on the Siena Mobilita website. http://www.sienamobilita.it/
Some useful links ...
Monteriggioni: Architecturally significant, this walled town was built in the 13th Century by the Sienese during their wars with Florence. The city wall is still completely intact and is roughly circular in shape with 14 towers rising from them. You will be dropped off just outside the walls. If you would like to explore the town a bit before setting off on foot (highly recommnded), simply climb the stairs from the car park to do so. https://www.discovertuscany.com/monteriggioni/
Castello della Chiocciola: The Chiocciola Castle is one of many medieval forts that were built, and still largely still exist, in the Monteriggioni area, an outpost of Siena's power. The presence of a large number of castles in the area was due to two fundamental factor;the proximity to the Via Francigena and its links with enemy of Florence, hence it has always been the scene of clashes and military operations. http://www.monteriggioniturismo.it/en/what-see/castello-della-chiocciola-2/
