Follow the red and white markers through the spectacular countryside of the Brenta Dolomites from Molveno to Rifugio Pedrotti, one of the most well-known rifugios in the area.

Begin the day by taking the cable car from Molveno to Pradel, there is a great viewpoint here over the lake south of Molveno, then take the 2 person chairlift from Pradel to the top station near Rifugio Montanara. From here follow the red and white painted markers, typical of Alpine mountain paths, through forest passing limestone cliffs, arches and caves to descend to the valley floor and cross the river bed.  The ascent begins after the Rifugio at Croz, zig-zag up the path through trees, to emerge into wildflower meadows dotted with small boulder fields.  As you near the rifugio the path becomes rocky underfoot before emerging onto the saddle where Rifugio Pedrotti nestles between the rock towers at the base of Cima Tosa.

Author’s recommendation

The views themselves are enough to make this walk spectacular – take time to look behind you to admire the view as you ascend towards the refuge, and to look down at your feet at the diversity of wildflowers in the meadows.

Safety information

Some of the day’s walks are on narrow paths (less than 1 metre) with steep drop-offs on one side, sometimes there are railings for your hands at these points, or wooden bridges underfoot (but not always), and near the end of the walk the route follows the markers over rocky outcrop.  Take care on these exposed and rocky sections – poles can be very useful here.

Tips and hints

There are a few rifugios to stop off at on today’s route: Rifugio Montanara (at the beginning of the walk), Rifugio Croz dell’ Altissimo (in the middle of the walk), and Rifugio Selvata as the path ascends in earnest to Rifugio Pedrotti. Do check opening times, and make sure to take plenty of snacks and water in case the rifugios are closed, or carry a picnic lunch with you. The latter half of the walk is exposed to the elements so if it is warm take enough water to avoid dehydrating.

Cable Car

Make sure to ask for the ticket covering both the cable car and the chairlift sections: the “corsa singola – prima e secondo”.

Cable car: Molveno to Pradel

Chairlift: Pradel to Palon di Tovre

A charming little town on the shores of Lago di Molveno, a beautiful blue-green Alipine lake.

Rifugio Pedrotti

Turn-by-turn directions

0.00 km – With your back to the Palon di Tovre chairlift station continue to the information boards on the left, and take TURN LEFT to follow the track as it descends slightly to Rifugio Montanara.  Take a moment to admire the view from the panoramic viewpoint here.

0.15 km – Continue STRAIGHT ON to follow the signpost to Rifugio Pedrotti (3.30).

0.40 km – Follow the track as it curves left, ignoring the vague path going straight on.  Then BEAR LEFT onto the narrower, lower path which begins to descend through the trees – follow the red and white markers painted on the trees and rocks.

0.80 km – At the signpost for Sevleno le Grotte continue on the same path as it begins to zig-zag downhill.  There are lots of tree roots across the path, please take care as they may be slippery.

1.0 km – Descend to the clearing in the trees and take care on the cliff path (as seen in the photographs).  Follow the steeply descending path for another 500m.

1.50 km – As the path joins another lower path TURN RIGHT sharply at the signpost for Rifugio Pedrotti (3.30).

2.10 km – Pass through the small tunnel through the cliff and continue STRAIGHT ON following the path with hand railings on the left.

3.30 km – The path passes Rifugio Croz dell Altissimo on your right. You are now close to the valley floor.  In 100m TURN RIGHT onto the track passing beneath the Rifugio towards the signpost for Rifugio Pedrotti (3.10).  Continue STRAIGHT ON to the other signpost ahead and TURN LEFT to cross the river bed following the red and white markers.  The river bed is often dry, but if there is water in the river use the stepping stones to cross if it is safe to do so.

3.60 km – Continue STRAIGHT ON ignoring the path up to the right, and follow the signpost for Rifugio Pedrotti.

3.90 km – BEAR LEFT following the Rifugio Pedrotti signpost across another river bed.  As before this is normally dry, but if there is water in the river cross on the stepping stones if it is safe to do so.

4.20 km – Cross the boardwalk with the steep drop on the left and the hand railing on your right and continue on the ascending path for approximately 1 km.  There will be more boardwalks as you ascend – take care on the wood as it may be slippery when wet.

5.30 km – Cross the wooden bridge over the small river and continue STRAIGHT ON to follow the path as it curves right in the hanging valley.  Ascend on the path to reach Rifugio Selvata.

5.50 km – On reaching the Rifugio TURN RIGHT facing the refuge to follow the signpost for Rifugio Pedrotti (2.20).

5.70 km – Continue STRAIGHT ON ignoring the steeply ascending path on the right.  Follow the path and ascend the zig-zags for 1.50 km.  Ignore the eroded empty stream bed courses which look like paths ascending straight up the hill and follow the zig-zags.  Cross another river bed and follow the red and white markers.

7.20 km – Emerge into a grassy meadow and pass a small house on the hillside on the left.  From the meadows there are spectacular 360 degree views of the mountain ridges.  Continue to follow the path around to the left as it ascends for another 900m.

7.90 km – BEAR LEFT up a mound and descend again over a section of flat ground before ascending again.

8.80 km – You can see Rifugio Pedrotti on the high mountain saddle.  Follow the red and white markers and TURN LEFT as the path meets the rock face to ascend around the rock outcrop and leads you towards Rifugio Tosa.  The route here crosses section of rock where the path isn’t visible, but use the natural steps in the rock and allow the frequent red and white markers to guide you.

9.30 km – At the signpost beneath the smaller building below Rifugio Pedrotti BEAR LEFT for Rifugio Pedrotti (0.10). In 100m you will reach the saddle.

9.80 km – On reaching the saddle point BEAR RIGHT following the red and white markers to Rifugio Pedrotti which can be seen ahead. The rifugio has an excellent viewpoint over two valleys, step inside and warm up, or grab a refreshment to relax in the afternoon sun with.

Arrival by train, car, foot or bike

The weather in the mountains, as normal, can be very mixed so make sure to pack layers, and waterproofs for cooler, wet days.  For warmers days remember sunglasses, hat, and suncream for protection.  Normal hiking equipment in a 20-30 litre rucksack, and walking boots or sturdy walking shoes are needed.  Walking poles for the ascents and descents are highly recommended.

Absolutely fantastic hike, but tough going with a long ascent. Definitely worthwhile using hiking poles. Refugio Pedrotti was clean and buzzing with lots of people. Can charge up cameras and phones on common charging stations on each floor.
