After a short stretch through the town, the ascent begins. Today’s highlight is without a doubt the 20m high observation tower. From here you can enjoy the wonderful Five Lakes View, so-called as the Moselle river appears to be 5 separate bodies of water.

The trail continues through a sea of vineyards down to the village of Leiwen. Why not visit the Sektgut St. Laurentius where you can sample a selection of highly-regarded sparkling ‘Sekt’ wines

Tips and hints

Villa Rustica -  One of the most important buildings on the Roman Wine Route.  The Roman villa has the Moselsteig Fling which accompanies the Moselsteig a good deal on this stage.  A detour to Villa Rustica is definitely worth it.  The uncovered manor house of a Roman estate from the 2nd century was partially reconstructed.  With 34 rooms, it is one of the larger mansions in the Trier region. Guided tours of the villa are available from April to October on Sundays at 11:30 am or after advance notice

Destination

Leiwen

Turn-by-turn directions

Start the hiking trail in Mehring, cross the Moselle Bridge to reach the other side of the river.

Walk a steep ascent up a stairway which has you gaining height quickly.  At the top there is a  sports field, neighbouring it is the Villa Rustica, stop by for a tour if you wish

The trail continues its ascent into the forest, soon after it steeply descends again and continues on a meadow path to the Triolago recreational area.  Spot the summer toboggan run on route.

A tough ascent begins as you make your way to the summit cross Knüppchen.  The steep ascent starts at Molesbach (river) and winds its way up past slate rocks. This bit can be strenuous and with the undulating ground take care as you walk.

At the summit cross, admire the view of Mehring, Schweich and Longuich, continue along the path over stairs and rocky path to the trail which starts ascending again when you reach the forest.  Cross the K85 road and enjoy hiking in the beech forest.

If you still have the energy to continue your ascent, take the opportunity to visit the Fünfseen- see Lake lookout tower to admire the most spectacular view of the day.

Relax as you descend through the forest, via meadows, dirt roads and former vineyards.  At the Hinkellay, you have almost reached your destination.  From here descend steeply into the Mosel valley.  At the tennis court, the access road to the centre of the winegrowing village Leiwen is signposted, follow the signs until you reach Leiwen.
