Begin your walking today by wandering through the old and narrow streets, which head down towards the sea. Follow the coast line to Ponta da Piedade, where you can admire the varied hues of the amazing sea cliffs and see how the wind and sea have carved out the many varying shapes. The colours of the cliffs are a sharp contrast to the turquoise sea.

Continue along the trail spotting seabirds and flora and fauna along the way. Arrive in the small town of Luz, originally a fisherman’s village but now a charming town protected by the Rocha Negra (black rock) cliff, a product of lava flow 150 million years ago. Here there is also a 16th century fortress, which now houses a restaurant with terrific views over the Atlantic. Perhaps you would like to eat dinner here tonight on one of the terraces and watch the sun go down.

Author’s recommendation

NOTE: Near Km 7 there are some cement steps that should be carefully lowered (near the cliffs).

Safety information

If there are any stretches of road walking and if there is no pavement or grass verge, please take extra care. The general rule is that you walk on the same side of the road as oncoming traffic, in order to avoid having your back directly to oncoming traffic. Be prepared to walk in single file and to stay as close to the side of the road as possible.

There may be sections where you will be walking through fields containing livestock.  Be vigilant and respectful of all animals.

Always make sure to stay hydrated and carry plenty of water. It is also advised to wear skin-protecting clothing and use sun cream/screen. We recommend you inquire about the day’s forecasted weather before setting out on your walks. A useful website for climate information specific to towns and countries is www.weather2travel.com  or www.yr.no

Tips and hints

Points of interest:

Praia Dona Beach – a classic Algarve cove nestled between sandstone cliffs. Often described as “the best beach in the world” and the most photographed in the Algarve.

Comilo Beach – framed by impressive limestone rocks and orange, yellow and red cliffs. The green-blue water and amber sand can be accessed by a long wooden staircase.

Ponta da Piedade – a landscape of coves, grottoes, and sea arches, sculpted from the cliffs over thousands of years. Each rock formation has been given a name – the Camel, the Kissing Couple and the Sphinx. Either admire the view from the clifftop or descend the 182 steps to sea level.

Rocha Negra (Black Rock) – a beautiful cliff on the east side of Luz village, created from volcanic action millions of years ago, which created black granite that carves through the Algarvian sandstone cliffs.

Recommended cafes and restaurants in Luz:

Restaurante Paraiso – lovely terrace with amazing views of the beach. An institution in Luz with more than 50 years of operation.

Ondaluz – a traditional restaurant known for its fish dishes and house lamb.

Restaurante Aquario – the only restaurant in Luz recommended in the Michelin Guide. Fantastic food and atmosphere, created by Sergio. The open kitchen serves typical Portuguese dishes on the menu.

Boaty’s Tapas Café – a beachfront restaurant serving hot and cold Mediterranean tapas. All dishes are homemade and include a range of vegetarian options. It’s the perfect spot for a drink whilst overlooking the beach, with spectacular views.
