This section takes you inland along an undulating ridge that is covered in a blanket of heather and peat. Explore remote and rugged Irish landscape at its best, with first-class walks. You’ll ascend the highest point of the Way’s coastal route, Knockavahaun, at 371m. A patchwork of forest and fields stretches out to Lough Currane. Ballinskelligs Bay and Waterville.

Charlie Chaplin and his family used to spend long holiday periods here and a bronze statue stands on the promenade at Waterville.

Safety information

This walk covers a lot of distance over open moorland and ridges with little in the way of shelter from the elements so check the forecast and speak to locals if you do decide to set out on a bad weather day. It can be fairly difficult to navigate if the visibility is low so you should take extra care to stick closely to the GPS tracks.

The two long stretches of moorland paths are separated by a minor road and there is a short section along a quiet road into Waterville. Although the roads and lanes can be quiet it's always best to walk on the right to face any oncoming traffic and make yourself as visible as possible.

There is a risk of ticks in the grass. Use insect repellent and check your body on arrival in Waterville.

Tips and hints

Food & Drink:

There are plenty of choices for food at the start and end of your walk. There is a pub with a shop on route called Dromid Hostel (seasonal) which is the only food stop along the way. It is therefore recommended to purchase a packed lunch from your B&B or from a shop in Cahersiveen before setting off.

On arrival in Waterville, there are many restaurants, bars & cafes to refuel after a long day on your feet.
