Start with a walk along Ireland’s ‘Old Butter Road’, used in the 19th century to transport butter to Cork. Climb the lower slopes of Eagle Hill before some lovely views across the inlet of Kenmare. Along the way you can take a shorter, but busier, detour to visit Staigue Fort, one of the largest ring forts to be found in Ireland.

Walk an old coach road leading to a boreen as you trace the track above the main Ring of Kerry road, following rocky trails, approaching the picturesque village of Sneem, with its jagged and rocky river bed.

Author’s recommendation

The remains of Staigue Stone Fort dating from the 4th century are worth a stop on today's walk. Its walls are up to 6.5m high and it is thought to have been built as a defensive stronghold for a local lord or king.

Safety information

Today's route involves a few steep crossings of two spurs, some steady climbs, and steep descents on hillside paths. Some of the grounds may become boggy after rainfal. Please take extra care in wet and windy weather conditions.

Much of this route follows country roads with no pavements so take good care. Although the roads and lanes can be quiet it's always best to walk on the right to face any oncoming traffic and make yourself as visible as possible.

There is a risk of ticks in the grass. Use insect repellent and check your body on arrival in Sneem.

Tips and hints

Food & Drink:

There is nowhere en route to buy food so it's best to speak to your B&B host to arrange for a packed lunch to be made for you or to purchase it locally before setting off. Please give them plenty of notice to do this. On arrival in Sneem, there are many restaurants, bars & cafes.
