This short day’s walk begins with a short ferry ride from Riva del Garda to Torbole, the town on the eastern side of Monte Brione.  On arriving in Torbole climb steps and cobbled paths for less than 1 km to reach Le Bussate adventure park.  Follow the trail along the valley side, taking in several sets of metal steps and walkways passing over the sheer rock faces affording excellent views of the valley below.

Author’s recommendation

Take time to enjoy the ferry ride from Riva del Garda to Torbole, and pay special attention to the unusually shaped hill of Monte Brione, which you will see from the sheer side of Torbole.

This walk is on a well waymarked path from Busatte to Tempesta, take care on the metal sets of steps and walkways especially if wet as they will be slippery.

The walk can be done in a morning or afternoon, so you just need some snacks and plenty of water in your day pack.  There are cafes and restaurants in Torbole, if you wish to eat or drink before returning to Riva del Garda.

Turn-by-turn directions

0.00 km – Catch the ferry from the west side of harbour of Riva del Garda to the town of Torbole, just a 15 minute ride away. On arriving in Torbole, with your back to the ferry terminal, TURN LEFT onto the pavement and walk towards the town.

0.07 km – TURN RIGHT to cross the road at the pedestrian crossing and follow the signpost for “Scalinato”.  Follow the cobbled road for approximately 50 metres, then climb the steps ahead and keep the metal railing in front of the houses on your left.  In 20 metres TURN RIGHT and climb the large set of steps ahead of you.

0.20 km – BEAR RIGHT and continue to ascend (as more steps go up to your right).

0.25 km – On reaching the road BEAR LEFT across it, looking out for traffic, to continue ascending.  Keep to the right on the cobbled path and ignore any paths off to the left.

0.30 km – Ascend steps to the road and TURN LEFT onto it, use the grass verge to follow the road for 100m.

0.40 km – BEAR LEFT onto a minor road with a hotel car park on your right.  Follow the signpost for le Busatte and follow the road as it zig-zags uphill for 200m.

0.60 km – At the T-junction with Via delle Busatte TURN LEFT following the signpost for le Busatte.

0.65 km – On entering the car park for the adventure activity park TURN RIGHT and pass the Parco delle Busatto info board on your right, then continue STRAIGHT ON through the car park.

0.70 km – BEAR RIGHT in front of the restaurant building and walk long keeping it on your left.  Shortly you will see a signpost for Busatte-Tempesta (1.20) beside a play park.

0.90 km – BEAR LEFT to follow the signpost after the stone stepping stones through the grass.  In approximately 30m at the bottom of the slope TURN LEFT and follow the signpost to ascend on a wide gravel track.  The track will become a good path between trees giving views down over the lake.  As you walk you will pass small info boards about the local plant and animal life.

1.20 km – At the viewpoint with the large info board on your left BEAR LEFT and follow the signpost onto the ascending track.

1.40 km – At the next signpost BEAR RIGHT to follow the Busatte-Tempesta route for approximately 1 km.

2.30 km – You have reached the first set of metal steps and walkways; use these to descend over the sheer rocks faces.  Take time to admire the excellent views here.

2.90 km – Continue STRAIGHT ON at the Busatte-Tempesta signpost, ignoring the path up to the left.

4.40 km – The track emerges from the trees and is cut by a wider track.  TURN LEFT onto the track to begin the loop part of the walk.  Ascend steadily on the track for roughly 1.5 km before reaching the viewpoint.

5.50 km – Continue STRAIGHT ON at the Garda Trek signpost.

5.80 km – You have reached the loop viewpoint – with excellent views up and down Lake Garda.  Take some time here to enjoy the view before follow the track as it descends and curves to the right.

6.30 km – At the end of the track TURN LEFT sharply onto the narrow path with the MTB signpost.

6.50 km – On reaching the track you walked out on TURN RIGHT onto it and follow it back the way you came.  The loop cuts out most of the steps and walkways apart from 1 set which you will ascend in approximately 300m.

7.90 km – Back at the large Busatte-Tempesta info board continue STRAIGHT ON

8.20 km – Ignore the path off to the right and continue STRAIGHT ON retracing your steps to the Busatte adventure park, and down the steps and paths to Torbole.

9.50 km – You have reached the end of today’s route – the main road into Torbole.  If you have time before the ferry you may want to turn right and explore the small town before getting back to Riva del Garda, otherwise turn left to the ferry terminal to begin the short boat trip bac to Riva del Garda.

Arrival by train, car, foot or bike

Equipment

Take a small day pack with waterproofs and a warm layer in case of unexpected rainfall, or on cooler, wet days.  For warmers days remember sunglasses, hat, and suncream for protection.  Walking boots or sturdy walking shoes are needed as the paths are rough in latter part of the walk.  Walking poles for the ascents and descents could also be useful.
