Wooler to Fenwick

Starting from Wooler High Street descend Church Street passing St Mary's Church and the war memorial and cross the A697. Cross the bridge over Wooler Water and turn right along a street that follows the old railway line. Turn left onto Brewery Road and follow the road uphill to the marked footpath on your left. Follow the trail across the open moorland of Weetwood Moor. 

Fork left as the path splits into two, passing a small plantation on your left. Turn left through a gate just before reaching a second then third plantation on your left. Descend towards the bridge taking the right of two paths and cross the road carefully. Cross the bridge, following the road uphill which passes Weetwood Hall. Continue on the road which bends around to the right. You will pass two poles which mark the course of a natural gas pipeline from the North Sea.

Walk past the houses of West Horton then East Horton, before turning left onto a road known as the Devil's Causeway. Turn right onto an unsealed road and pass the old World War 2 pillbox on your right before descending to cross the Hetton Burn. Follow the path which bears left then right until it meets the road. Continue straight across the junction, continuing in the same NE direction. Continue uphill then turn left onto a footpath just after a plantation, where the road veers right. Walk alongside the plantation before turning right through a stile then left to walk alongside the field. Pass the corner of the large wood before turning right onto a track that ascends towards the woods ahead. On meeting the wood turn left until you reach the clear path on your right leading up to St Cuthbert's Cave.

Return to the main track and continue to the edge of the woods. Turn right and ascend to the top of the rise on the shoulder of Greensheen Hill. Follow the undulating path across the fields to meet the St Oswald's and Northumberland Coast Path which join from the right. Here, you get your first view of Holy Island.

From the stile at the junction of the trails, turn left onto a track keeping the view of Holy Island to your right. After entering Shiellow Wood take the signposted track on your right past another track and then Shiellow Crag House on your right. Continue straight crossing a stream and track following the path signposted to Fenwick. You will cross a series of small wooden bridges and streams to reach a stile at the edge of the wood before continuing alongside fields. Veer left to arrive at a farm before turning right and following the road downhill into Fenwick.
