There are a couple of road crossings where you need to take care, look both ways before crossing, particularly when crossing the A697 from Wooler. There are several stretches where you must walk on the road as there is no pavement or verge. Walk on the right side facing the oncoming traffic unless there is a right-hand turn, in which case you should cross to the outside edge to allow drivers the maximum chance to see you.

Points of Interest
Westwood Moor
Westwood Moor was the site of a large annual livestock fair held until the 19th century called the Whitsun Tryst. There are also several pre-historic sites including stones with cup-and-ring marks. These probably date from the late Stone Age and nobody quite knows their meaning or purpose. You can visit one which is a 250m diversion from St Cuthbert's Way. As the Way levels at the moorland plateau, there is a waymarked junction. From here head south past two boulders at the moor top. Once the nearby radio mast lies directly south-west, start looking for a flat-topped rock. Also available on GPS NU 01020 28020
As the markings have been eroded over thousands of years, they are best seen under low sunlight.
St Cuthbert's Cave
A natural cave eroded from yellow Fell Sandstone - room to shelter several people. Bishop Eardulf of Lindisfarne and the monks carried St Cuthbert's body during the Danish raids of AD875 for seven years. The cave was the first stop and then Cumberland, south-west Scotland, Yorkshire and Melrose. His body was placed on a ship in Whitehaven with the plan to carry the body over to Ireland - however, a rain of blood from the sky indicated that the Saint should not be removed. St Cuthbert's body eventually was laid to rest in Durham.
Kyloe Hills
The Kyloe Hills and woods have many hidden secrets including the witches hideout at Bogle House, amazing sandstone crags and excellent bouldering as well as a bizarre scattering of Monkey Puzzle trees. From the top you have great views of Holy Island and Bambugh Castle.

Starting from Wooler High Street descend Church Street passing St Mary's Church and the war memorial and cross the A697. Cross the bridge over Wooler Water and turn right along a street that follows the old railway line. Turn left onto Brewery Road and follow the road uphill to the marked footpath on your left. Follow the trail across the open moorland of Weetwood Moor.
Fork left as the path splits into two, passing a small plantation on your left. Turn left through a gate just before reaching a second then third plantation on your left. Descend towards the bridge taking the right of two paths and cross the road carefully. Cross the bridge, following the road uphill which passes Weetwood Hall. Continue on the road which bends around to the right. You will pass two poles which mark the course of a natural gas pipeline from the North Sea.
Walk past the houses of West Horton then East Horton, before turning left onto a road known as the Devil's Causeway. Turn right onto an unsealed road and pass the old World War 2 pillbox on your right before descending to cross the Hetton Burn. Follow the path which bears left then right until it meets the road. Continue straight across the junction, continuing in the same NE direction. Continue uphill then turn left onto a footpath just after a plantation, where the road veers right. Walk alongside the plantation before turning right through a stile then left to walk alongside the field. Pass the corner of the large wood before turning right onto a track that ascends towards the woods ahead. On meeting the wood turn left until you reach the clear path on your right leading up to St Cuthbert's Cave.
Return to the main track and continue to the edge of the woods. Turn right and ascend to the top of the rise on the shoulder of Greensheen Hill. Follow the undulating path across the fields to meet the St Oswald's and Northumberland Coast Path which join from the right. Here, you get your first view of Holy Island.
From the stile at the junction of the trails, turn left onto a track keeping the view of Holy Island to your right. After entering Shiellow Wood take the signposted track on your right past another track and then Shiellow Crag House on your right. Continue straight crossing a stream and track following the path signposted to Fenwick. You will cross a series of small wooden bridges and streams to reach a stile at the edge of the wood before continuing alongside fields. Veer left to arrive at a farm before turning right and following the road downhill into Fenwick.

Ausrüstung
Such is the way of British hiking, that you need to be prepared for all seasons and weathers; sturdy hiking boots, warm clothes and a waterproof/wind-break layer are all required, as is plenty of sun-cream and a healthy respect for the sun.
Walking poles will be a big advantage on some of these ascents and descents.
Ensure your phone is fully charged; if you doubt the battery will last throughout the hike, it might be beneficial to bring a power bank.
This walk is isolated with few opportunities to buy food or water so be sure to bring enough with you.
