Your first day takes you toward the coast, walking through forests and fields on your way to Fenwick/Beal.
Wooler is the largest town in the Cheviot Hills area and was founded in the 12th century but has been a market town since the 13th century and today still has one of the most important livestock markets in northeast England. As you follow today's walk, enjoy the pleasant mix of farmland and forest and pass through Weetwood Moor, part of which lies between the nearby hills and the coastal plain. Crossing Weetwood Bridge and near the 18th century Weetwood Hall, continue on to Fenwick.

This walk covers some distance over open land with little in the way of shelter from the elements so check the forecast and speak to locals if you do decide to set out on a bad weather day.
There is a risk of ticks in the grass. Use insect repellent and check your body on arrival in Fenwick/Beal.
When walking on minor roads without pavement it is important to take good care. Although the roads and lanes can be quiet it's always best to walk on the right to face any oncoming traffic and make yourself as visible as possible.

Please note: Take extra care following this route as depending on your overnight accommodation you will be staying in either Fenwick or Beal.
Beal is slightly closer to the coast and adds roughly 4.5km to your day. As a result, the next day to Holy Island is slightly shorter as you will be closer. If you would prefer a taxi transfer from Fenwick to Beal, please let us know in advance so this can be organised.

These maps and routes are designed to be used in conjunction with our traditional documentation. We have recently embarked on a conversion initiative to bring the two elements together, and this itinerary will be covered in due course.
In the meantime, using the two elements alongside each other should go a long way to ensure you have a safe, enjoyable and problem free day.

Good comfortable boots or walking shoes are recommended. Whilst the terrain is not particularly difficult it can be muddy with some waterlogged stretches after heavy rain. Walking poles are an option if preferred. The British weather is changeable so waterproofs should also be carried just in case.
Ensure your phone is fully charged; if you doubt the battery will last throughout the hike, it might be beneficial to bring a power bank.
