At 2 km longer than the low route and with 200 m more ascent/descent this route is slightly more challenging but takes in Glenashdale Falls and some forest trail before descending to the coast to rejoin the low route into Brodick.

On this final stage on the Arran Coastal Way between Whiting Bay and Brodick you can choose to hug the coast following the low route (see - Whiting Bay to Brodick (Low Route)), or take this higher route.  The high route takes you up passed Glenashadale Falls and through shady forest on higher ground with great views towards Lamlash where you join the lower route to follow shoreline around Clauchlands Point to reach Brodick and the end of the Way.

If you have time you can take a short ferry ride out to the Holy Isle with it's monastery and herd of wild goats (see tips, hints & links for more details).

Sicherheitshinweise

There is some road walking involved on this section, but only on small lanes and when on main roads there are good pavements. If the weather is bad you will find more shelter on this day's waking as you'll be in the forest for a good portion of the day.

Points of interest

Holy Isle

Home to the Bhuddist Centre for World Peace and Health there are a range of courses and meditation retreats offered on the island. There are also some lovely walks to be had even though the island measures only 3km by 1km. A ferry runs from Lamlash Pier three times daily between Easter and October, the journey takes 10 minutes and no bookings are needed.

Wegbeschreibung

0.00 km – With your back to the Whiting Bay Coffee Pot café in Whiting Bay TURN LEFT then continue STRAIGHT ON out of Whiting Bay to retrace your steps on the A841 for 200 m.

0.20 km – After crossing the stone bridge TURN RIGHT off the road and onto the track following the walkers signpost with trees on your right-hand side.

0.70 km – Continue STRAIGHT ON through the trees as the track becomes a path to continue following the river upstream towards the falls.

2.00 km – Continue STRAIGHT ON ascending passed the Glenashdale Fall viewpoints.  At a T-junction with a track shortly afterwards TURN RIGHT on the track and in 200 m BEAR RIGHT to continue on the track skirting the trees on your right-hand side before bearing left as the track.

2.80 km – As the track joins a road TURN RIGHT onto the road and continue to follow this quiet minor road for 6.10 km between trees and forestry areas.  Take care of vehicles and walk on the right-hand side into oncoming traffic, taking to the verge to give way to large vehicles.

8.70 km – Continue STRAIGHT ON following the road to cross a river then pass a building on your right-hand side.

8.90 km – On descending passed a couple of information boards on your right-hand side TURN RIGHT onto the road at the T-junction and follow it down into Lamlash with fields on your right.

9.10 km – BEAR RIGHT on the road to continue towards Lamlash keeping the trees on your right.

9.40 km – Continue STRAIGHT ON passed the Arran Fine Foods factory and shop to reach a road junction.  In 100 m TURN LEFT at the junction and walk on the pavement on the left-hand side of the road into Lamlash.

10.00 km – At the next road junction in Lamlash BEAR LEFT and continue on the pavement to cross the bridge (don’t bear right for Cordon).

10.50 km – Continue STRAIGHT ON along the main road through Lamlash.  At the end of the small forested area on the left-hand side a narrow gravel path joins on the right after the playpark – this is where the low route joins the high route.  Follow the road through the town for 1 km.

11.50 km – As the main road bears left towards Brodick continue STRAIGHT ON passing the church and follow the road for 1.5 km.

12.90 km – Continue STRAIGHT ON at the signpost for ‘Brodick via shore’.

13.20 km – Pass the Arran Outdoor Centre and in 500 m pass through the wooden gate to continue STRAIGHT ON towards Clauchlands Point. Hamilton Rock sits just off shore here - a good place for seal spotting.

14.50 km – After rounding the headland continue STRAIGHT ON along the coastline.

14.80 km – Cross the wooden stile then negotiate the boggy/rocky trail. Continue STRAIGHT ON the trail with views of Goat Fell ahead.

16.20 km – Cross a set of wooden steps and continue STRAIGHT ON.

16.80 km – Continue STRAIGHT ON to cross the rocky beach then join a gravel track passing a couple of buildings on your left.

17.00 km – TURN LEFT where the track splits and ascend away from the shore.

17.90 km – As the vehicle track bears left TURN RIGHT to leave the track and follow the signpost for Brodick, through woodland then open fields.

18.40 km – After crossing a few fields TURN RIGHT to descend following a perimeter fence. There are views of Brodick ahead.

18.80 km – Cross the stile then TURN LEFT onto Strathwhillan Road to pass the farm.

19.40 km – At the junction with the main road TURN RIGHT to descend to Brodick ferry terminal.

19.80 km – You have reached the ferry terminal and the end of the Arran Coastal Way - congratulations!
