Walk to Zams via Memminger Hut
Route: Standard E5 route: Madau – Zams
The climb from Madau to Memminger Lodge takes 3 hours. From Madau, the walk to Zams im Inntal takes 8 to 9 hours via the standard route. You will need to allow time for breaks, so the hike can easily take up to 12 hours in total. In summer, many of our guests tackle this stretch, but it is not suitable for everyone. You are best placed to make a responsible decision based on your own knowledge of your fitness and your limitations.

Today you may be walking past a few different areas where cows graze. Although generally very docile and used to walkers, keep your distance and never turn your back on a cow that is behaving strangely or aggressive. Be particularly vigilant around cows with calves.
Start out as early as possible and allow yourself sufficient rest breaks.
Always allow plenty of time for your hike. The walking times indicated do not include breaks. Rest and photo breaks must be added to the times indicated.
Check the latest weather information and be on the lookout for changes in the weather. Storms can develop rapidly in the Alps.
Do not leave the marked hiking trails.

If you are staying overnight in Madau, you will be pick-uped at Gasthof Hermine with taxi company Feuerstein (at 8:50) and ask the driver to take you to the 'goods cable lift' (Materialseilbahn in German) for Memminger Lodge (this will save around 45 minutes). To arrange a pick-up, let the driver know the day before that you’d like a pick-up in the morning. If you want to set off earlier to avoid heat/storms, the 45-minute walk can serve as a nice warm-up, as the terrain is only slightly uphill.
If you are staying in Holzgau: Then a taxi is booked for you at 8:15 a.m.
Please note: There is are no refreshment opportunities at Memminger Lodge in June, July and September (the Oberlochalm and Unterlochalm lodges are only open in August). Be sure to take a packed lunch and/or lots of snacks to keep you going!

0.00 km - With Gasthaus Hermine behind you, BEAR LEFT down the path to the road.
0.20 km - Once you reach the road, TURN LEFT and follow the road until you reach the goods cable lift for Memminger Lodge. Ignore all of the paths that branch off to the sides.
3.50 km - From the goods cable lift at Memminger Lodge, TURN LEFT and cross the Parseierbach river using the two narrow wooden bridges. Follow the signs to Memminger Lodge. The steep climb alternates between mountain forest and pine woodland. The path is muddy in places and can be slippery when wet.
4.90 km - You will reach an open alpine pasture with views of a beautiful waterfall. The path runs to the left of the waterfall and climbs steeply over a narrow ditch.
5.90 km - You will reach the plateau on which Memminger Lodge is located. Continue STRAIGHT AHEAD on the clearly visible path to Memminger Lodge. Look out for the red/white signs and signs for Seescharte/Zams.
7.30 km - At the fork, TURN LEFT and pass the Seewisee lake. Follow the path as it crosses a field.
7.80 km - The path now starts to slope steeply upwards and leads you through a rocky area and then through a steep, narrow rocky gorge along the Seewisee stream. Be careful if the ground is wet, as it can be slippery.
8.30 km - Once you arrive at the junction at the top of the path, continue STRAIGHT ON towards Seescharte, staying on the E5. The Mittlerer Seewisee lake is below you to your right. The Parseierspitze is visible behind it. This is the main peak of the Lechtal Alps, at 3.036m. The climb to Seescharte runs diagonally on a rocky slope. Take care not to slip!
8.90 km - The path on the final stretch to Seescharte is equipped with wire ropes. You will climb a steep rocky plateau up to Seescharte, via a narrow gap between two rocks. This is the highest point on today’s hike.
8.90 km - FOLLOW THE STEEP, WINDING ROCKY PATH down towards Lobbach. Some sections of the path are equipped with wire ropes.
10.00km - The path curves round to the right and the landscape becomes a little greener. Continue STRAIGHT AHEAD, following the path. Ignore paths that branch off to the sides.
11.20 km - You have reached Oberlochalm Lodge. In August, this lodge alternates its opening hours with Unterlochalm Lodge. Continue STRAIGHT ON; the path now starts to slope downwards more gently.
13.80 km - You have reached Unterlochalm Lodge. Behind the lodge, continue STRAIGHT AHEAD on the slightly undulating woodland path.
15.90 km - Come to the Zammer Loch gorge. Follow the path along the steep wall, parts of which have been carved out of the rock. The path is sufficiently wide, but there are a number of sections that are exposed. You’ll need a good head for heights. Continue STRAIGHT AHEAD, following the path.
17.20 km - Continue STRAIGHT ON. The path now winds its way downwards.
19.60 km - You have now reached the bottom of the valley. At the junction, TURN RIGHT onto the gravel path, following signs for Zams. After 200 m, TURN LEFT. Cross the bridge; you will soon arrive at a rest area at the Bäuerinnenkapelle chapel. Behind the bridge, TURN RIGHT and take the next LEFT TURN into Burschlweg.
20.10 km - KEEP TO THE RIGHT and walk towards the river 'Inn'. TURN LEFT into Uferstraße and cross the bridge over the river 'Inn'. From here, follow the main road in Zams to the town hall, where you will also find the tourist information office.
20.90 km - You have reached your destination for today: The tourist information office in Zams. Please consult your accommodation list for details of how to get to your accommodation from this point.

Ausrüstung
Always wear good walking boots with a robust sole, and take waterproofs with you. Don’t forget to take plenty of water with you (at least two litres per person) and to protect yourself against the sun.
Use trekking poles to protect your joints during the long descent.
