Route: Standard E5 route: Madau – Zams
The climb from Madau to Memminger Lodge takes 3 hours. From Madau, the walk to Zams im Inntal takes 8 to 9 hours via the standard route. You will need to allow time for breaks, so the hike can easily take up to 12 hours in total. In summer, many of our guests tackle this stretch, but it is not suitable for everyone. You are best placed to make a responsible decision based on your own knowledge of your fitness and your limitations.
Today you may be walking past a few different areas where cows graze. Although generally very docile and used to walkers, keep your distance and never turn your back on a cow that is behaving strangely or aggressive. Be particularly vigilant around cows with calves.
Start out as early as possible and allow yourself sufficient rest breaks.
Always allow plenty of time for your hike. The walking times indicated do not include breaks. Rest and photo breaks must be added to the times indicated.
Check the latest weather information and be on the lookout for changes in the weather. Storms can develop rapidly in the Alps.
Do not leave the marked hiking trails.

If you are staying overnight in Madau, you will be pick-uped at Gasthof Hermine with taxi company Feuerstein (at 8:50) and ask the driver to take you to the 'goods cable lift' (Materialseilbahn in German) for Memminger Lodge (this will save around 45 minutes). To arrange a pick-up, let the driver know the day before that you’d like a pick-up in the morning. If you want to set off earlier to avoid heat/storms, the 45-minute walk can serve as a nice warm-up, as the terrain is only slightly uphill.
If you are staying in Holzgau: Then a taxi is booked for you at 8:15 a.m.
Please note: There is are no refreshment opportunities at Memminger Lodge in June, July and September (the Oberlochalm and Unterlochalm lodges are only open in August). Be sure to take a packed lunch and/or lots of snacks to keep you going!
Always wear good walking boots with a robust sole, and take waterproofs with you. Don’t forget to take plenty of water with you (at least two litres per person) and to protect yourself against the sun.
Use trekking poles to protect your joints during the long descent.
