And so begins your Moselle Trail adventure. Fuel up on a typical German breakfast of eggs, fresh bread rolls, cheese and ham. Today’s trail is undulating and varied, but highly rewarding. Ascend steep open trails, through forests and past orchards. Pause along the way to catch your breath and take in panoramic views of the lush Moselle Valley beneath you.

Walk to the small town of Schweich. Nestled on the bank of the Moselle, Schweich is a historic Roman wine route town. Why not visit the Niederprümer Hof, a former farm which is now a cultural centre, complete with a wine cellar where you can enjoy a wine tasting or two.

Botanical highlights in the Meulenwald forest 

Discover varies tree species, they were planted for experimental purposes in 1954 to test climate-friendly and fast-growing timber suppliers, as the tree population had been severely affected during the Second World War.  21 species have survived and have grown into giants.  Spot massive Douglas firs, Siberian birch, Japanese cake trees, and Northern Caucasian fir and impressively large mammoth trees from China.

 Start: Porta Nigra (next to the tourist information centre) 

Take the path via Nordallee and Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge to rejoin the Moselsteig.  Walk along the narrow ascending rock path which begins behind the Weisshaus restaurant. 

Take a break after your ascent to admire the view of the city from the sandstone cliffs.  Walk along the edge of the forest before you descend again, making your way to Biewer, a village on the banks of the Moselle. 

Once through Biewer, the path ascends steeply again as you make your way back up via a steep staircase as the rocky path snakes its way up. 

 The Moselsteig leads you back down the hill, letting your legs recover from your recent ascent, into the Wallenbachtal (Valley) where the trail intersects the path, B 52 intersects. Prepare for an ascent to the Ehranger pulpit, from where you can see Schweich in the distance.   

The path snakes its way down to Ehrang where you will cross the river, Kyll, to reach the centre of Ehrang and the local church.   

Follow the trail out of Ehrang along of the Way of the Cross (marked by crosses) to the HeideKapelle (a small chapel). You will be rewarded by the view of the Moselle Valley and to the "Heidestuben" cliffs beyond the valley. 

 Pass a collection of houses called  "Auf der Heide" before continuing through the forest in the direction of Quint, if you would like to a quick detour visit the botanical highlights in the Meulenwald forest.

The Moselsteig continues through forest and fields until you reach Schweich

The trail takes you past the train station in Schweich and ends at the Stefan Andres Fountain, which commemorates the writer, born in the village.

We recommend wearing hiking boots that are well broken-in, plus a rain jacket and waterproof trousers in wet weather, as well as taking sun cream and a hat on nicer days.
