Ascend the slopes of the Moselle river bank on a serpentine trail as it winds uphill. You are surrounded by panoramic views of the glistening Moselle river and its meadows covered with vineyards. Enjoy a picnic at one of the benches along the way, the perfect spot for a breather. Finally come to the Huxlay Plateau before descending through vines to Mehring, an authentic Moselland town.

Spend the evening sampling local regional dishes at one of Mehring’s restaurants. Hearty, meaty food is the order of the day, washed down with a glass of delicious white wine.

Zitronenkrämerkreuz Detour - The  Zitronenkrämerkreuz detour, named after a commemorative cross, runs for around 20 km around the Moselle towns of Mehring, Pölich, Schleich and Ensch. Quiet passages with many changing landscape formations alternate with short ascents in the slope over the Moselle, crowned with a view of unique river panoramas. Cultural sights such as the "Roman water pipe" in Pölich or the "Zitronenkrämerkreuz" are included in the tour. There is a connecting route between Schleich and the Zitronenkrämerkreuz, so that the path can also be divided into two independent loops (8.3 km and 13 km).

Wegbeschreibung

Start this stage in Schweich, walk between vineyards and forest as you embark on the demanding ascend of the Mehringer mountain. Ascend to the Rupperroth Schutzhutte (forest refuge). Take a break and enjoy the beautiful view of the Mosel valley as you make your way up.

Once past the hut follow the forest edge, dotted with broom shrubs, and continue through the forest to the Landwehr ditches which you will cross. The path turns right in the direction of the Moselle follow the trail until you reach a plateau above the Longen vineyards

On the opposite side of the Moselle you can see Longuich.  Both Moselle villages are connected via the Moselsteig. Follow the trail as it takes you through an oak forest path towards the Mehringer Berg (mountain) to the Moselsteig.  On the last section of the ascent, walk through meadows to reach the highest point of this stage at 415 m.

The view from the Mehringer mountains if there is good visibility you will be able to see the volcanic cones of the Eifel and the Erbeskopf in Hunsrück.  After a short walk over the ridge, you will soon turn right to start your descent into Kausholz and Hundsbuckel.

The Moselsteig splits here, you can take a detour via the Zitronenkrämerkreuz (see above), if you wish to skip the detour continue descending, taking in the beautiful view of the Mosel loop marking Mehring.

Walkers will enjoy the terrain of the 1 kilometre long 'Finnish run' at the outdoor fitness Park as it is thickly covered with wood chips to decrease the amount of impact on knees and ankles.

Cross the Himmelstreppe (stairs to heaven) as you ascend to the Huxlay plateau where you will find a hut, benches and great views of Mehring.  From here wined your way through the vineyard down until you reach Pölich and the Roman stage water pipe and Mehring ahead of you.
