First the delightful Borrowdale Valley and then tranquil woodland walking with views to Derwent Water. Walking in the Lake District simply doesn’t get any better. You would be foolish to miss the tea shop at Grange!

Keswick is the largest tourist centre in the Northern lakes and can get busy. There is plenty to do in this buzzy lakes town.

Sicherheitshinweise

This route involves crossing stone walls and fences by means of step-stiles, ladder-stiles as well as passing through (kissing gates) and crossing footbridges. Please take extra care, especially when squeezing through small gaps as it can be slippery in wet weather and it might be easy to lose your balance.

Some terrain can be boggy, especially in wet conditions (during or after rainfall). Some parts may become muddy and slippery and it is important to make sure you take your time while crossing these areas.

This section involves some road walking along quiet country roads as well as very short stretches along main roads especially as you are approaching Keswick. Always be mindful of other road users and pay attention when crossing roads.

If you wish to do so it is possible to cut the day short by taking a ferry from Derwent Water to Keswick, see 7.00 km in your turn-by-turn directions.

Food & Drink:

On your walk from Rosthwaite to Keswick, there are not many possibilities for refreshment stops as you will only pass two cafes in Grange. For a packed lunch you should ask your overnight accommodation in Rosthwaite to prepare a picnic lunch for you (supplement payable and to be requested the night before).

Wegbeschreibung

0.00km – Start at the Yew Tree Farm, opposite from the Flock-In Walker’s Bar in the centre of Rosthwaite. Leave the town following a narrow road that becomes a stony path along a stone wall, and later along a river.

0.70km – Cross a stone arched bridge and BEAR RIGHT as you continue to follow the path downstream. After 100 meters you will approach two gates, cross the one on the right and walk STRAIGHT ON.

1.00km – BEAR LEFT and follow the track as it veers away from the river, then BEAR RIGHT ignoring a gate to your left. Cross through a kissing gate and continue to follow the track through woodland.

2.00km – TURN RIGHT at a junction and continue to follow the undulating path. After 150 meters BEAR RIGHT following an uphill track signed as a footpath to Grange.

2.60km – Cross through a gate and continue to follow the path as it runs downhill towards 2 footbridges a short distance away from each other. Follow the path towards a campsite to your left and pass through a metal gate. BEAR RIGHT as you follow the track ahead.

3.00km – Continue STRAIGHT ON as you arrive at a tarmac road. At the junction continue STRAIGHT ON and TURN RIGHT at the top of the road.

3.50km – Continue STRAIGHT ON ignoring the gate to your left and after 300 meters arrive into the village of Grange. There’s a café here to your left where you can enjoy a coffee or tea called The Grange Café and Tea Room. Alternatively, TURN LEFT and follow the tarmac road as it bends to the right, passing a red phone cell to your right.

4.80km – TURN RIGHT through a wooden gate and follow the track along the trees crossing a footbridge, then a kissing gate.

5.30km – Cross a gate and BEAR RIGHT as you follow the path towards a footbridge, then towards Derwent Water. Arriving at a junction TURN LEFT onto a clear, white, and sandy path which you will continue to follow. Keep the water to your right as you cross several footbridges.

6.10km – Cross a gate and continue STRAIGHT ON following the well-defined path parallel to the trees.

6.50km – TURN RIGHT at the tarmac road signed to Brandelhow passing through a gate. After 200 meters cross another gate and continue to follow the track.

7.00km – BEAR RIGHT following the track towards Derwent Water again and a gate. BEAR LEFT, then BEAR RIGHT through woodland and pass a pier where a small boat runs to Keswick and back.

8.20km – TURN LEFT through the gate and follow the clear path as it heads towards another two gates. Continue to follow the path as it winds along the lakeshore, there are plenty of great picnic spots here!

8.70km – Cross the gate and TURN RIGHT following a tarmac road. BEAR RIGHT at the junction at Hawse End Centre and continue to follow the road ahead. After 300 meters BEAR LEFT as the road curves and TURN RIGHT through a wooden gate onto a small path that runs into the woods.

9.00km – Cross the gate and continue STRAIGHT ON following the clear path towards another few gates.

10.00km – Cross the gate and continue STRAIGHT ON following the footpath signed for ‘Footpath to Keswick’. After 200 meters TURN LEFT at a small junction, the eagle-eyed will notice a small yellow marker on a signpost next to the path. Climb through the woods, first going steeply uphill, afterward downhill. TURN RIGHT at the tarmac road passing Nichol End Marine Launches where you can also stop for a coffee at Nichol End Marine Café.

11.00km – Continue STRAIGHT ON passing ‘Derwent Water Marina’ on your right and Derwentwater House on your left. Continue along the tarmac road keeping left to walk on the footpath.

11.40km – TURN RIGHT after Harney Peak and follow a dead-end which is also signed as the public footpath to Keswick. Pass Derwent Hill on your right and continue STRAIGHT ON. Ignore the gate engraved with ‘Squirrel’s Rest’ and Cycle Route 71 towards a bridge.

11.80km – TURN RIGHT away from the tarmac road and follow the track signed footpath to Keswick in between fields and along fences. Follow this track until the end, passing through a kissing gate. TURN LEFT crossing a gate and TURN RIGHT at the main road, crossing a bridge and walking in direction of Keswick town center as well as the tourist information centre. Continue past the local co-op supermarket and continue to follow the sign for the town center straight ahead through a roundabout.

13.20km – You have arrived at the market square of Keswick, a lovely traffic-free area with plenty of bars and restaurants to celebrate the end of today's walk.

Ausrüstung

Sturdy hiking boots, warm clothes, and a waterproof/wind-break layer are a must! The weather can change quickly, and it is therefore important to be prepared and carry any extra equipment or clothing even if the weather looks okay. If you are used to walking with walking poles, it could be great to bring them too.

Ensure your phone is fully charged; if you doubt the battery will last throughout the hike, it might be beneficial to bring a power bank.
